Blank admin page after upgrade

Upgraded from 2.1.4 to 2.1.8 via extension manager. I selected the zip file, did an upload and install and on the subsequent page selected "Upgrade" (rather than "Install"). The browser (chrome) spun for a few minutes and then presented me a blank page. I left it for a while but regardless when i try to hit the phocadownloader pages from the joomla admin site I get a blank page. The front end access to the content that was there before upgrade seems to still be working, it is only the admin pages that do not.

Any help or suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Thanks Jan,
those links were helpful and got debug turned on and working in the admin site..BUT..I load any page except for a phocadownload one, I get a page and the debug output. All PhocaDownload pages still give me a white page. I cannot change php.ini on my hosting but looking at it, it matches the values in your link.

Hi, then try to look and errorLog on your server, without getting any information from server it is not possible to say what can be wrong on the server
