transparent background on phoca 4 (joomla 3.x)

I remember the times when it was easy to change the background area around the phoca thumbs as described here: viewtopic.php?f=35&t=8893

Hi, just set the "transparent" value instead of some color into the background field in parameters component in menu link to gallery.

But nowadays one only has the possibility to directly modify the CSS-files using phoca gallery's menu entry "styles" or "themes" when I'm not mistaken. No matter what I try, the background area around the picture remains white, which is unfortunate. I already analyzed the CSS-files, without luck so far.
