All users will essentially need multichaind running on their machines?

Would all users who we envision on the network have multichaind running on their machine?

Does this also mean that all users will have a copy of the entire blockchain running locally? is there any option for "light" clients?

 

EDIT: I just noticed the getnewaddress command, and that can be used for users who connect to a node, however that would mean the node would hold the users private key?

Yes, MultiChain supports light clients, using the same SPV mechanism as the bitcoin network. We've made some initial modifications to two popular SPV libraries/wallets, linked at the bottom of the developers page, although these don't yet support viewing and sending native assets.
