About block signature

Unlike other blockchains, Multichain has a block signature on the coinbase of each block. What is the importance and necessity of this block signature? Is this block signature a must? What does this mean for Multichain?
Thank you, Multichain.

This is required for consensus models that don't rely on proof-of-work, but instead use a set of permissioned nodes to build the blockchain. The blocks are signed to prove who created them.
