What makes you...
the fact that I have 4 and they are are currently still living...seriously I would say, pick them up from school/events/go to the school programs/be concerned about their grades {even though they are not}...I guess that would be it...and even though they are not well behaved at home everyone else says they are so so good when they are around them...

I NEVER EVER criticised them to other people or moaned about them. And guess what? They lived up to my high opinion of them. They didn't let me downSo I think that  I have been rewarded for my loyalty to them. And if I were to give anyone advice, (I try not to) it would be to do the same.Christina

Brad says I am a good mom because I understand what it is like to be a kid. I am a cool mom. I think it is because I know he is the center of the universe, my world, my fortune.....Did I say I love him???

Setting rules. Being consistant- both with rewards & punishments. Having fun together. Having alone time (me & them). Telling them I love them always, no matter what, even if they are being punished at the moment (rare- but it happens). Letting them be their own person. Making sure they are safe while being their own person. Expecting the best from them. Eating dinner together almost every night. Laughing with them. Playing their games, their way. Teaching them manners. Being strict. Being fun. Saying no. Saying yes. Knowing their friends & parents. Walking away from the chaos at times & leaving their dad to deal with it (mu hu hu hahahahahah)............... Hmmmm, that's a start.

I think it's because I try to remember what it was like when I was a kid.   This doesn't always work, because I have a quick temper, but I try every day.

LOL, Cielle!  My DS#2 often tells me that I am mean too.  He doesn't like the "N" word.Listening to them and hearing what they aren't saying.  Reading to and with them.  Leaving my homework and housework for later.

I am not a "birth" mom , but a step mom. I try to set the limits and expectations for them that their mom doesn't. I try to reward them for doing their best. When they are being punished I tell them why, and it is not to be mean, but I am acting in their best interest. They respect me, and in return they get respect back. For a step family, the kids and I get along pretty darn well. Of course it helps to have a 6 ft 2 boss behind me that they call dad. LOL

I let them make mistakes even though I want to jump in :)  Since mine are now almost 18 and 16, the fact that they are at this age and still want to talk to me is a miracle, as I could have strangled them both when younger!
