Very interesting challenge. I combined option 1 and 2
I used green as my background, tan as the border, and yellow, red and blue for matting and other accents. All the animals are wild, not confined and definitely have a mind of their own. Thanks for the challenge.
I chose to include both options in my layout by using green, brown, and yellow with the elephant photos and paper.

I'm loving this challenge! It fits so well with these old zoo photos. I combined both options for this one.
