Mixed Media Mix Up!
Hey everyone!

I'm over on the blog today with a new series I'm calling Mixed Media Mix Up. https://www.acherryontop.com/articles/M ... me-1-18044

It's a little tutorial post with a video to introduce mixed media and how to incorporate it into your layouts. We're starting with baby steps!
I asked around and got ideas of what you'd like to see, so expect all types of techniques to pop up.

We're starting today with stripes and splatters. Seriously anyone can do them!

This is a thread to
  • Ask questions
  • Show examples of stripes & splatters
  • Give additional tips
  • Any other discussion pertaining to mixed media stripes and splatters.
Can't wait to hear your thoughts and see what you make!!

Clever ideas and tutorial, Natalie!! I have Gesso and never really knew what it's purpose was in mixed media.

Re: Mixed Media Mix Up!
Great video with lots of inspiration.  I made 2 layouts.  This first one I mixed Vicki Boutin pigment powder in Blueberry with water.  I applied the stripes with a wide flat brush.  I applied glitter mixology with matte acrylic gel using an art wedge.  I was not too happy with the way it turned out so I made a 2nd page also.
Image
I did apply splatters with my flat brush but next time I'll use a smaller brush for that.

Re: Mixed Media Mix Up!
For this one, I used the same blueberry pie pigment/water mixture but used my flat brush to make paint drips.  I mixed Vicki Boutin gold glaze with the white texture paste spread over a Vicki Boutin honeycomb stencil.  I also did splatters with the wide flat brush again.
Image
I did not apply gesso to either one of these since I was using the Vicki Boutin foundation paper.

Melissa, I love the blue and gold combination with the paint splatters!! Both layouts are beautifully done. I have a hard time using gold gonna have to play with mine after such a great example!

Aww I love it!!! I'm so glad you shared it with us. I love the gold and blue mixed together - that' s not  a color combo I would've thought of!

I also love that you learned from your process and determined adjustments to make. MM is DEFINITELY trial and error and takes practice!!

This is STUNNING! so so pretty!!!!

I haven't tried the VB MM paper yet - It looks like it holds up well! That's a great alternative to gesso - we need to shout that from the rooftops! If gesso and wrinkled paper make you crazy - go for the foundation paper from Vicki!!!

Used a bunch of older items in my stash. Going to put some personal journaling on it as I think most of these challenges are going in my bible journal. (bare with me i its sideways, i am trying lol)

Yes I love it!! Did you use acrylic paint? I love the 3d flowers on top of the stripes!

I used rich in color watercolor for the purple and the splatters, and acrylic paint for the blue and yellow stripes. Liquid pearls in buttercup for the flower centers and rub-ons on the diecuts. Joy is my word this year so I thought fitting for my first mixed media challenge mix up!

Wonderful process video, Natalie! I think I could try my Gelatos with those techniques. What stencil did you use with your layout?
