Good morning, Cherries! Today, I wanted to know more about . . . Barb (pawprints)! There are a few things I've always been curious about, so I'm going to just ask away. If anyone else has any questions, feel free to post them!
Barb, I know that you are a graphic designer and I have a couple of questions related to that.
1. Are you freelance or do you work for a company?
2. I know that each design is different and each project probably starts with a different stepping stone which gets built upon and around. (Some start with a color scheme, some start with a word/phrase/logo, some start with a shape.) Can you tell me about your "process"? Do you find it easier to start with colors as opposed to shape? Also, along those lines, do you find yourself with the same preferred process when you scrap? For me, a layout almost always starts with the photo. However, I have found paper that I absolutely love and have built a layout around that as well.
3. The million dollar scrappy question . . . which do you find stimulates your creativity more, the digital route or the paper route?
OCD is not an adjective. It is not a personality quirk. It is not synonymous with being organized. It is a complex and debilitating mental health illness that affects people of all ages and walks of life, and is defined by the presence of unwanted, intrusive thoughts and repetitive actions. I am an OCD warrior and I fight for my son.
I talk to Barb almost daily, for the past few years (at least!), but I do have one question
Have you ever met a fellow cherry? If you so, who was it?

Brandy
Barb,
How long have you been scrapping and how long have you been a cherry on ACOT? What subjects do you like to scrap about besides pets?

Well I started working for a local shopping newspaper way back in the 70s. I went to college for Advertising Art and Design and loved learning photography, calligrapraphy, design, ect, but believe it or not page layout at that time was may least favorite thing to do. Lol. I was looking for a summer job between semesters and I got a job with a local shopping newspaper. I started as a paste-up artist. Back then we didn't have computers to do ads, we did them all by hand. A layout artist sketched the design, a typesetter set the type, and a paste-up artist cut everything up and glued it all together. Yes it was where you started lol. This was when I met dh, as his father was the owner of the paper (which we eventually became the owners of when his dad passed). When I was promoted up to layout artist I remember not being too happy about it. I remember my very first ad. It was a small ad, and remember that I got the copy and sketched out the size and looked at the blank space in front of me and said "what do I do now?" Lol. Eventually I got used to it. The one thing you really need to be able to do when you are doing advertising is you need to be able to break up copy into what is most important, and you need to be able to present it in a way to draw the reader in. I found I could do that. But designing ads for a local newspaper was really very confining. The customers buy a space and really try and get their money's worth by cramming as much in as possible. So there really isn't much you can do in the way of creativity and design, especially when you have a bunch of copy and coupons in a small space. Or you have a customer that tells you exactly how he wants his ad to look, even if it isn't even possible to do it that way, or you know it won't be effective.Barb, I know that you are a graphic designer and I have a couple of questions related to that.

Where I really was able to get my chance at true page design was when an organization that we printed for had me start designing pages for their business paper. We were moving on to doing our work on computer at this point, and I had started to do some flyers for their Executive Director, and I became in charge of her account. They put out a quarterly Business Newspaper that we printed at our place. Someone did the design for them and we printed it. Well dh brought a copy of one home one day and I said omg that is awful! Lol! It really was though. Columns of text just ran up and down the pages, with articles just ending at the bottom of one column and continuing at the top of the next one. Ugh. So I said to him to tell her I could make her paper look so much better. The following issue she asked me to just do the centerfold for her. She loved it so much the issue after that she had me do the whole paper! I loved it! Their papers were not like a newspaper, they were printed on white paper, not newsprint, and they were very picture intense. They would showcase all of their business events and she gave me full creative reign. I did all of their flyers and brochures and newsletters and event invitations too. I wasn't working at the paper anymore so I was able to work at home on my Mac and got a tabloid size printer to print out the pages. So technically at that point I was still working for the newspaper as a company, but it was our company. I also did some newsletters that I also got through our company. After we sold the newspaper she stayed with me so I guess at that point it became freelancing. She became my client, and I did all of their work until she retired. Then I retired too. I now love being able to do page design for my OWN projects. And digi is such an extension of the page design that I used to do, except I can design for me now! And I never got to work in full color, only spot color. I never worked for a magazine or anything where I could do full color. Well now that I think of it I did get to do full color when color printers became really good. Then I could do her flyers in full color photos and full color graphics and she could have then printed on a color printer.
Sorry for the long explanation lol.
When designing pages I would always get all my copy and pictures together and then study it. Many of the pages I worked on were very photo intense, so that was the basis that I would work around. If a page had a lot of different things going on I would mentally divide it into sections. Maybe add a sidebar, a picture section, a boxed area. It would depend on what the page would be about.2. I know that each design is different and each project probably starts with a different stepping stone which gets built upon and around. When scrapping I always start with the photos and decide how many I will be using. Then I work on the colors/papers as I usually draw my colors from my pics. From there it's additional papers and embellies. On rare occasions if I do have a paper that I love and want to use, then I'll look for a photo or photos that goes with it. I find that harder though, to find photos to match the paper. I prefer to find papers that match the photos.
Hey Barb! Do you have other hobbies or crafty things you enjoy doing besides scrapbooking?
Hi Barb!
Do you have your digital layouts printed into book formats? Do you have books printed in themes or chronologically?

Hi everyone! My name is Susan and I love to scrapbook!
Lol that's a tough one. I think they both do but in different ways. Playing with paper has always stimulated my creativity, even as a kid. A pack of construction paper and a pair of scissors and I was one happy camper! Lol. I've been collecting paper punches since I can't remember how long. I'm ashamed at how many I have. It's bad. Lol. I told dh once that if they had all this stuff that they have now when I was a kid I would never have gone to school lol. I love paper scrapping so much, and I love getting creative with all the wonderful supplies and papers and embellishments. Gluing, pasting, cutting… omg so much fun. Now digi gives me a creative outlet in a different way. Sometimes I just look at a pic and I know I want to scrap that pic digi. Sometimes I just don't feel like taking out all my supplies. Lol. Either way designing on the computer really sparks my creativity, and going through a whole bunch of different kits for different elements, clustering a whole different bunch of digital elements together, and playing with shadows to add dimension, along with using some Photoshop magic and blending, really gets my creativity going. And I don't have to get up from my chair lol.3. The million dollar scrappy question . . . which do you find stimulates your creativity more, the digital route or the paper route?
If I keep going mia please bear with me Cherries. Maddie and Aiden are spending a few days with us, so I may get interrupted from time to time.
When we went to see Boomer's litter we knew he was going to be a big boy. We saw pics of his father and he was a huge beautiful black lab. We were thinking this dog is going to go boom, boom, boom when he walks. No joke. So we decided to name him Boomer.sdwhru wrote:I've always wanted to know:
How did you choose Boomer's name?
Are you partial only to Labs or have you had other breed of dogs?
As kids we both had dogs, I grew up with mixes and dh grew up with full bred Chows. As a family though we have only had labs. We got Cider and we were immediately hooked on labs. They've all been labs ever since.
Yes I met a fellow Cherry just once. She hasn't been on the board here in quite a long time but maybe you remember her… Sus aka suslvgeo. She was on Long Island once and we met and had lunch at the Olive Garden and then went to Michael's. It was so awesome to meet a fellow Cherry irl. We had our waiter at the OG take our pic together.blbabe1234 wrote:I talk to Barb almost daily, for the past few years (at least!), but I do have one question

Do you feel you are more a morning person or night owl? When do you feel most crafty?

I've been scrapbooking for as long as I can remember. I have always put memorabilia and photos in albums. And I was always taking pictures! I even was the historian in one of the only after school clubs I ever joined. I was in charge of taking pictures and making a scrapbook of the year's events that we had. I would love to see that scrapbook today lol!lissahope26 wrote:Barb,

I joined ACOT back in 2008 just before Maddie was born. I had shopped here for years, but I was too shy to join anything. One day I decided to join and enter a layout in a contest they were running. It took a lot for me to do that… to put myself out there. I was so comfortable and everyone was so warm and friendly that I was so happy I didi. And I have been a Cherry ever since!
Besides my doggies I LOVE scrapping about my grandchildren!
Although scrapping is what I do most I love doing anything crafty. Many times I make cards for the grandkids and I love getting crafty with them. I die cut papers for them and we make things, and there is always a supply of paints, markers, papers, stickers, and glue sticks for them to use when they are here. I also love wrapping presents. Lol. I really get into it. Crazy I know but to me it's all in the presentation! DH gets a kick out of the fact that I actually have a whole closet full of wrapping supplies. Lol.Deanna13 wrote:Hey Barb! Do you have other hobbies or crafty things you enjoy doing besides scrapbooking?
Sometimes I just wish I had more time to get into things more. I have projects that I want to try but never seem to be able to get to doing them. Maybe one of these days I'll paint some of those flower pots I bought with the chalkboard paint I bought, or maybe get creative with the KaiserCraft Beyond the Page items I've bought but haven't done anything with yet. Sigh.
Hi Barb!!!!
I, like Brandy talk with Barb almost everyday ! But I don’t think I’ve ever asked this one.
Living on Long Island you are close to the water, do you like the shore? Or the beaches? Do you
ever take the pups there?

I do print out my digital layouts, although I am behind in printing the more recent ones. I have them stuck all around the walls of my scraproom, I have some in picture frames in different rooms of the house, and I also have them all printed and put in postbound albums that I keep in the den. I love when I see Maddie and Aiden picking them up and looking through them. They get to see their childhood and many of the things we've done together through my layouts. Even things that they are too young to remember.shoorn wrote:Hi Barb!
Do you have your digital layouts printed into book formats? Do you have books printed in themes or chronologically?
It's funny you should ask about chronological. None of my digi layouts are in books chronologically. They are all random. I do have them in some sort of a loose theme. Sometimes it depends about what the cover of the album says. I have one album that has one of my favorite quotes on it… "Life isn't about how many breaths you take but about the number of moments that take your breath away" and in that are all random digi pages about those moments in life, like the birth of the grandchildren, moments that are just so precious and heartwarming, and stuff like that. I have a doggie themed book so many of the doggie digi layouts are in there. One that says "Love This Life" and pages that go with that theme. So the digi layouts and albums are really just about moments in time. Paper layouts I like having chronological, at least for the baby albums and puppy albums. But I learned that scrapping chronologically can burn you out, and the Cherries taught me it is ok to scrap out of order! In the end you can always put them IN the books in order.
You are the only person I know that does both digital and paper and does them both so beautifully. Reading above about your creative process, have you ever considered doing a class and/or process video. You have SO MUCH to offer and I would be the first to sign up!
Omg I am DEFINITELY a night owl! Not a morning person at all! Lol.DN in MN wrote:Do you feel you are more a morning person or night owl? When do you feel most crafty?
Usually mid to late afternoon is when I feel most crafty, although I have had some pretty cool late night crafty sessions too! Not as much now though. I usually like to sit and watch TV with dh at night, but I can easily get my crafty on if he is involved in a ballgame or on a long phone call with one of his brothers!
