As I've mentioned before, I don't really watch television. So, I know little of what everyone else is watching or thinks is cool, etc.
Last night my hubby had his friends over, and of course the tv was on . . . loud. In the brief time I was within ear shot of the tv, I heard these three things:
Naked and Afraid
Buying Naked
Dating Naked
Really? Is there that much of a draw to see people naked? When I hear these titles I immediately picture a bunch of 13 year old boys trying to get a glimpse of their first semi-nude body.
Are these shows seriously that popular or interesting? Why is everyone naked? I just don't get it. I don't see how seeing your twig and berries is going to get me more interested in the show.

perverse generation . . . maybe they just want the shock value, etc. We do not have cable here nor watch anything like that.

Ran across one of those shows one day - I think Naked and Afraid. Anyway, of course they blur or block out all the nude parts; but my question, and that of everyone in the living room, was 'Why are they naked?". Apparently, they do all kinds of weird jungling, foresty type adventures naked. Well, what's the point of being naked? Are things scarier when your naked (only when I look in the mirror!!!)?
I've also noticed that on the History Channel there are Swamp People and other assorted stuff of this type. I have sent emails to Discovery (who owns every one of these 'educational' networks) and asked why they don't just create a weird jobs channel so I can actually watch some HISTORY on the History Channel.
Also, remember when TLC stood for The Learning Channel - you know, back in the day when it had only been on air for about 10 years - obviously before Jon & Kate and Honey Boo Boo!
I have nothing against people who want to watch River Folk, Swamp People, Ice Road Truckers, Hog Callers, Rednecks, etc. (my brother and grandson are into Finding Bigfoot) but it seems that it's on every 'educational' channel and it just keeps getting more bizarre. Please make it stop!

Sorry - that was just going off! Being a TV junkie, I just really have issues with TV at this point in history - and it only seems to get worse.

I completely agree with you on TLC. I also heard the other night an ad for (I might have the title wrong) "Sex Sent Me To The ER".

Actually Naked and Afraid is an interesting show I think. They drop 2 strangers off in some remote location. They have to be survivalists and go through a rigorous selection process. They usually (at least last season) made some sort of cover-ups with leaves ect. They get no food or shelter and have to be out there for 21 days surviving off the land. I haven't seen this seasons new episodes but last season interested me for some odd reason.
Beyond that, tv is really trashy and uninteresting right now. I have been watching mostly netflix and amazon prime because nothing else is on that is worth watching.

I've watched Naked and Afraid and it is pretty interesting. I wouldn't want to be dropped off in the middle of the woods naked or not. Sometimes at night we watch mindless tv and get a laugh at shows like Sex sent me to the ER. The stories are pretty funny, we watch another show I think it's true stories of the ER or something like that.
YIKES! Now I know why I don't have T.V. We gave up satelite about two years ago and love it, we have netflix and Hulu, no commercials or other stuff we don't want to watch.
We don't have cable either, and when that decision was made the whole family had a rough couple days, but it was the single best decision we ever made as a team. We are much better for it. DH and I just could not handle paying for trash.average_kim wrote:perverse generation . . . maybe they just want the shock value, etc. We do not have cable here nor watch anything like that.

Ditto! We got rid of DirecTV 2 yrs ago. We miss not having the Food Network or History Channel, but we just couldn't afford it anymore.average_kim wrote:perverse generation . . . maybe they just want the shock value, etc. We do not have cable here nor watch anything like that.

I'll give you that Naked and Afraid does sound interesting. But, can't you be in full on survival mode in a t-shirt and briefs?

By the way, I'm so not a prude. I love being naked just as much as the next gal, but not for attention and certainly not for anyone's approval or ratings!

Until they show Naked Scrapbooking....I think I will pass!!!
RIGHT ON!!! If I get to be on, I promise to wear an Apron - otherwise you guys will just think it's another horror movie.emmapaige wrote:Until they show Naked Scrapbooking....I think I will pass!!!
I love my DirecTv - I watch Science Channel, History/H2 when somethings on, the Military Channel sometimes, Animal Planet sometimes, and Turner Classic Movies - and Starz kids (I love kids movies). I really think there's some fun stuff on regular TV (ABC, CBS, NBC) - which I'm happy for the networks, but sad that cable has turned into pure crap.

I'm just basically over reality tv in general. Unless it is a show about actual talent (American Idol, So You Think You Can Dance, Master Chef) I don't watch. I wish our country would quit promoting and funding people's idiocy or lunacy or perversions. How most of these shows ever made it into production is beyond me. That being said, we do a lot of dvr'ing tv shows that are mostly dramas and sit-coms, so we can watch them later. My favorite shows on cable are on USA and TNT. "Covert Affairs," "Royal Pains," "Falling Skies," "Perception," "Rizzoli and Isles" to name a few. :)

I happen to agree with Nonna....TV has become YUCK!!! I will hang head and say I've watched three reality shows. Bachelor and Bachelorette. Didn't last year because after two shows of the Bachelor I was done....disgusted.
I also really like Duck Dynasty. I can so relate!!! Reminds me of Larry's roots in East Texas marrying into a red neck family. So I can relate to my red neck self made husband who is always thinking of something else to make more money. At the same time I have tamed and civilized that wonderful husband of mine. He can dress and enjoy the arts such as Broadway shows when they come through Houston or even the Symphony! And even now he shakes his head at how backwoods his family is. And I chuckle!!!

I only watch 4 shows and we have all the channels since my husband works for the cable company....go figure.
When they start showing THAT, I will cancel our cable!...lolemmapaige wrote:Until they show Naked Scrapbooking....I think I will pass!!!

I totally agree! I also got very fed up with HGTV and it's lack of "G" in the shows. It too went the way of reality tv and such, but still, with the Home and Garden, of course it's gonna be reality. but then it got to be too much, and anymore it was all hours long bits of House Hunters. There's only so much of that show one can watch. What happened to the garden stuff? We got rid of cable over a year ago, and I'm really starting to miss it, especially at night and such, but really, I'm not missing the bill. At Christmas was when it really bothered me, not having cable. But really, I think they should stick to what the channel is supposed to be about. TLC has turned into "The Live Channel" cause it's all reality TV about weird people. bring back good tv, on cable, without making me pay extra for the higher channels that all the good tv moved to!Thenonna wrote:Ran across one of those shows one day - I think Naked and Afraid.
