I just baked some of the poni beads like Scrapy1967 did and mine turned out fine, low plastic odor smell, I only had to bake mine at 400 degrees for around six or seven minutes and mine were done. I would like to show a picture of mine, but don't know how to do it on here, How do I upload an image?. thanks,

I bought some f the perler beads and tried them. The pony beads are 100 percent better. Perler beads are pretty when melted but stuck to the parchment paper and when pulled off they had a little plastic rim on them and I do not like that

did you use the large or small size pony beads?

Found this tutorial on Pinterest where Jennifer Mcguire makes her own enamel dots with Viva Paper Pens, available here in the store!  I don't have any yet, but I'll be trying this soon.

I finally got a chance to try making these and they turned out great!!  I used Perler beads, a pack of 1000 was only $2.99, less than a pack of enamel dots!  I used my Ranger Craft Sheet on a cookie sheet and they did not stick at all.  I baked them at 325 for about 20-30 minutes.  I used one bead for medium sized, a bead cut in half for the small size and two stacked on top of each other for large.  It was tricky to get the stacked ones in the oven without them toppling over, but other than that it was very easy.  There was almost no smell at such a low temperature.  (higher temps led to a strong plastic smell).  I now have 35 colors of enamel dots for under $3!!  Thanks so much for sharing this.

Thank you SO much for posting this! I'm on my third cookie sheet and having fun! It's like I'm 8 years old watching my shrinky dinks bake again   I'm using the perler beads from EK Success, 325 degrees for 25 min.  With parchment paper they lift right off.  I tried stacking two together but didn't line them up just right and the shape was weird.  Also cut some in half to make smaller ones. Thanks again for the idea!

I JUST finished sorting (because I'm OCD) the 11,000 set of Perler Beads.  Some stayed mixed as they weren't ones that I see myself using, but many were sorted out.  I also learned thanks to a YTer that I follow that you can buy mini beads (called mini hama beads) on etsy from an overseas seller and they are about 1/4 the size of regular ones.  I was worried about baking these and not using them because they are about the mid size (or at least my test batch was when I cut them in half...I think not cutting them in half will just make them thicker...not any wider from what I've seen) but I use the smaller size the most.  My worry is being able to handle them because they are SOOO tiny...plus, I'm betting they'll melt faster.  For 7,500 it is about $12-$13 from the shop I found them on and I'm trying so hard to talk myself into getting them.  Having the two sizes in perler would be the make or break for me as to whether or not I'd use them any so it should be a no brainer.

Mine turned out almost exactly the same size and thickness of the packaged enamel dots.  A single bead created the medium sized dots and when I cut a bead in half (making two rings) the were smaller, but still domed.  Stacking them on top gave me a bigger dot, but it was really hard to get them in the oven without them slipping.  I posted a picture above where the ones from Recollections are on the left and mine are on the right.   I'd be curious to see how small the small beads are.

My cut in half ones did NOT come out to be the size of the small dots.  They actually came out the size of the medium dots.  I'm thinking it could have been because I had to leave them in longer.  I did 5 of the translucent glittered ones and the clear were the only ones not filling in so instead of 30 minutes, I ended up having them in there nearly an hour but they came out PERFECTLY.  I'm thinking these ones from overseas might take a bit longer to stand on end (but since I use a silicone mat, they stick really well...it's a pain in the butt taking them off one by one but it really helps keeping them steady with little effort while setting them up to go in the oven) but it'll be less work since it takes a long time to cut them all in half evenly.  I'm not sure if it's easier using certain scissors or what, but I waited on doing anymore until my opaque ones were all sorted.  My 3 year old really wants to cook more because he had a blast helping me with my small test batch a few days ago.

What about a silicone mat cookie sheet?  They are meant ot be in the oven and are really non-stick??

Yes, a silicone baking mat works great. That is what I have and there is little to no smell. I have been using the Perler beads.
