A Blue Moon
this Friday. Second full moon in August which most folks think is a blue moon. But technically it is the 4th full moon in a calendar quarter. lol Whatever there won't be another until 2015.

p.s. this is brought to you courtesyof an old(er) lady that reads the Old Farmers Almanac regularly.

Re: A Blue Moon
You get a second full moon in at least one month every year. Do the math. The moon cycles in 28 days and there are 365 days in a year. It's the same reason why if a doctor writes you a prescription for 12 packs of birth control pills you will run out in less than a year. (but yeah, try telling that to them. Most of them can't get the math!)

Interestingly there are either 1 or 3 blue moons in a year, but never only 2.

Re: A Blue Moon
The Farmer's Almanac says: For more than half a century, whenever two full Moons appeared in a single month (which happens on average every 2.5 to 3 years), the second has been christened a "Blue Moon."

Although it's not rare, it's not common. Only 1 in approx. every 3 yrs.

The last blue moon was Dec. 31, 2009.

Having had a kid born on a blue moon made me look it up and on his 30th birthday will be the next blue moon after tonight, July 31, 2015.

Re: A Blue Moon
VERY cool that it will hit his birthday again! That has to be really rare, as well!

My son was born on the Ides of March, and while I knew Caesar was murdered on that day (took a lot of Latin classes!!) - I did not know a lot of other things that I looked up when he was born on that day, too! I did find out there's an amazing Italian restaurant on the site of his slaying, and I told Joey he has to put it on his bucket list. He was not impressed. . OK, I was.

That was the first thing to pop into my head when I read the title.
Mildred - Mom to 2 girls and a husband (I tell people that I am a single mom of 3. Ages 59, 37 and 31) lol. And a proud Grandma to Orahn (7) Sawyer (5) and Mazie (3).

The moon does not actually cycle every 28 days. This month, the two full moons are August 1 and August 31. The moon's cycle is closer to every 30 days.
Info follows from the Old Farmers Almanac article ;

whenever two full Moons appeared in a single month (which happens on average every 2 1/2 to 3 years), the second has been christened a "Blue Moon"
here also is an even older meaning from the same article:
the Maine Farmers' Almanac made occasional reference to a Blue Moon, but derived it from a completely different (and rather convoluted) seasonal rule. As simply as can be described, according to Trefethen's almanac, there are normally three full Moons for each season of the year. But when a particular season ends up containing four full Moons, then the third of that season is called a Blue Moon!

This is where the saying came from once in a blue moon because it is fairly rare as in every 2 1/2 - 3 years.
