Using the right stuff
I'm enjoying the thread about what takes the most time when creating a layout, and my time consumer is the design. In thinking about each view point, I have to question how everyone 'remembers' to use all of the cool stuff they bought? Sometimes when I'm going through my stash I come across something I bought that didn't get filed into the correct year to match certain pics, and of course I didn't use it for those specific pictures I had in mind when I bought it. Do you ever do this? Do you have a list of stuff to consider when creating a layout? I get into phases where say... I use ribbon all the time, or use a certain thing ALL the time, and forget about other embellies, like my die cuts, and later when showing my pages to someone or just looking through them I think - Oh that would have been really cute if I would have added....this or that to the page. It's like a need a checklist when I do a page. Does this happen to you?

Happens to me all the time! I really need a better organizing solution for the stuff I buy. Right now I have all my embellies sorted by type. Thinking maybe I should sort them by color? Or by theme? Not really sure, but I totally forget to use things I have. I made a list of all my types and I try to use at least 3 types of embellies with each layout, but I still forget to use things, especially papers!

I have tried to find the ideal way to organize my scrappy stuff. Have not got it figured out yet. And because of it, I have left items I intended to use on a lo off. Frustrating! And most of the time, once the LO is in an album, it is DONE!

I like the idea of a list and trying to use at least 3 types of embellies...

I have a hard enough time trying to get pages done, so once I place them in the album pile - I agree - it is DONE!

Yep, I do this all the time. I have my scrappy stuff sorted by themes, but I still forget to use things or else I miss place them. Then I come across them when I am looking for something else.

I agree, once it's in the album I don't touch it again.

YEs i am the same as the rest of you!! I do get on kicks where I do one tecnique all the time and then forget about others... I have all my stuff sorted by themes too, after several different types of sorting and years of collecting!! LOL
I wish I had a little checklist... I guess we cherries could create one!

I actually keep a file separate labelled as "kits I haven't used yet." :) That way, I can try and get use out of everything I've bought/downloaded. It does mean copying a kit over twice, since I put it into it's designer folder plus the kits I haven't used yet, but it works for me. I just delete it from the extra file once I've used it, but I still always have a copy in the designer folder. :-D

You read my mind! I could really use a checklist. I'll start a new thread for it.

Having a used folder is a great idea. I'm going to have to do that once my home pc is fixed and things get organized again. thanks

Re: Using the right stuff
I put my newest, unused stuff in one certain area. That being said, when I'm in the creating a layout place, I forget about the location I put everything in and leave it off the page. I'm with the "when it's in an album it's done" group!

Re: Using the right stuff
I have everything sorted by type right now - chipboard, flowers, metal embellishments, etc. I wonder if I rearranged how it's organized if I would be more productive? It seems like I spend a big part of the time I am scrapping searching for something that I know I have - but can't find. I get really frustrated sometimes and end up using something that I can find - but always wish I could have used "the perfect item that is currently missing" - the sad reality is that usually I can find it when I'm not looking for it, even if it is where it's supposed to be. It's like it becomes invisible when I'm looking for it! :winkb:

Re: Using the right stuff
I know someone who has many of those plastic bins that hold 12 X 12 and for certain themes or pics she puts everything she buys with that in mind inside it. It holds a good bit, from pp to all the embellies. So, she can grab it, look through and use what she wants for all the LO's pertaining to that. It's easy for her to grab and go to a crop with too.

I sort by themes and it works for me, I also sometimes make kits if I buy paper and embellishments together that I want to use together.

oh, that's a good idea. I will have to start doing that, when I buy stuff I want to use together they tend to get seperated and then I forget about them.

You know, that's not a bad idea : Checklist!

I should make a list of a bunch of supplies that I keep forgetting about - brads, eyelets, buttons, etc and then when I'm doing a page make a point of using one or more with that page!

Someone want to come up with a master list?

Re: Using the right stuff
I guess I have that problem, but it is mostly forgetting to use rub-on's and stickers that I have. When I buy stuff with a certain theme in mind (which is rare, but does occasionally happen) I tend to make a kit of the stuff and keep it together. Things like disney, racing, etc. Most of my stuff is generic though and I have it sorted and the way I have it stored, I can't pull one thing out without looking at something else.

For me, getting into a rut and using the same stuff doesn't really happen cause I have to put everything away when I'm finished. If I don't, the kids will make off with it and I'd have to hunt it down. So if I want to use something, I actually have to physically get it out. On the other hand, that will occasionally make me lazy and I live with what is on my table from the last project (if I am lucky enough to get more than one thing done at a time) and no more. LOL!
