say a prayer or send good vibes for my aunt. My Mom just called and they have taken her to the hospital in Columbus and they think she had a stroke!
Updated to add: My Mom called back a little while ago. They have her in a room and have done a CTscan. Pretty sure she had a TIA and her number was 14 and is now 3 (don't know what that means, yet). They plan to also do an MRI and keeping her for a day or so to make sure. Mom said she is back to her bossy self (she's the oldest sibling) and she is hungry! This happened during lunch with my Mom and I'm so glad she was there because she is so level-headed in a crisis. Thanks so much for all your prayers. Please keep them coming!

The numbers refer to the NIH or National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale. Zero would represent someone with no deficits at all. It is very specific as to what you do to rate some one so that a 14 at my hospital is the same as a 14 at your hospital and the same as a 14 at the Hospital of BFE. The fact that she dropped so much is a sign that all her normal functioning is returning and is a good sign, but it's a wake up call to modify risk factors such as smoking, blood pressure, possible carotid artery narrowing, etc. That's great news that the number is now so low!

Nancy,
Thanks so much for that info! My mother said the doctor had told her that was a good sign. She has never smoked, is 72 and still very active (bikes 20-30 miles almost weekly and golfs weekly). Unfortunately, she probably does have high blood pressure and is definitely a type-A personality, so I hope this wakes her up that she needs to relax and take care of herself!
