scraptag wrote:well, by now, some of you have had your fireworks. We still have 2 hours. Kristin, my f-stop only goes down to 3.5, so that means I'll have to lengthen my shutter time, right? I'm bringing my tripod. I think I will do a few on auto to see what the settings are and then go from there. I wish I had a 50mm prime lens that went down to f 1.8. That would be sweet.
Can't wait to see what everyone ends up taking!

Yes and yes... you got the right track.

Its not that hard. A big part of it is getting a good composition of the photo. I was busy volunteering all night last night. But my husband got these with no tripod and my standard kit lens. He is not a photography dude at all. So I firmly believe anyone can do it!

Love the spiral in the photos! Tell your hubby, good job! And scraptag, yes, you'll drop your speed down; instead of auto which will automatically try to give you a flash reading, try the P setting. Its just like Auto except it won't tell you to use flash. That part you have to do manually. But it will give you a decent starting point. Have fun! Can't wait to see!

Ha ha! i still shake it with a tripod! I should have used the timer more, as I don't have a remote, but they look FUN anyways. I'll post when I get th em uploaded. The neat thing is that I took them above the lake, so I have the beautiful reflection.

Re: Tips for taking fireworks pics with a DSLR???
I took some last year using similar settings as I do for Christmas lights. I set the camera mode to M for manual. Then used ISO 100, F22, and a timed exposure (B = bulb) and then varied the length of time from 15 to 30 seconds.

I think the shutter may have been open too long on these as well, This is the only one that I actually like my squiggles on, because there is so much color. The other ones are just kaka!

Re: Tips for taking fireworks pics with a DSLR???
Teri I did so much research yesterday. I was determined to get it right this year... LOL! I have a Sony A300 and I set it to M and used the bulb setting. I don't even know what the heck that means but it kept popping up during my research online. I was able to figure out how to set it on my camera by looking in my camera's manual. ISO was set to 100 and f-stop = f/1.7. Oh and I used a 50mm prime lens. I really wish I understood all of this stuff... you know... "the whys" then maybe next year I wouldn't have to look it all up all over again! :)

Re: Tips for taking fireworks pics with a DSLR???
Here is a composite of some of my better shots--I took over 200! I took these with a Canon Rebel on auto "Sports" with the flash off. Here's what I learned: Tripod, tripod, tripod!! I was leaning against a car and it was ok, but tripod with remote will be sooo much better! Next year I will definitely have a couple decent lenses to play with. I want some closer shots! Next year I will try to talk DH into NOT parking in the mall lot with everyone else--they don't turn out the huge street lights and I think it affected a lot of the photos. Next year I will know enough to take it off "auto" an be able to play with shutter speeds, etc. But for the first time out, meeehh...

Image.

BTW--this isn't a hybrid. The tape alpha is digi--DH swears that it looks the real think stuck on that picture! (It's Merkeley, but I'm betting you already guessed that!)

Our fireworks were last night and I almost ran out and bought a remote yesterday before we went. After having my camera crammed up against my face the whole time, I'm definitely investing in a remote for next year.

I think your pics turned out great and your layout is fantastic!!!

Great pictures! I don't have a rebel, but try taking pictures with my SonyCybershot H10, and most came out blurry.

Carol, those are amazing.
Heck! I'm so ticked about my fireworks, I'm hunting down more to go to. I can always set up outside Disneyland, right?
