I'm thinking I'm going to stop complaining about our podunk bank that doesn't even offer us a debit card since we get free overdraft!

Find my books here. See the mom (crafting, cooking, organizing, and homeschooling) side of me here. {Under construction}
You are correct - we were talking, to an extent, about two different things. I apologize.
However, to say that those who are complaining about the fees are the irresponsible ones is also incorrect - well, not entirely because they shouldn't be writing hot checks either. Writing checks for money you do not have is not the answer to the problem. For every action you take there is an equal reaction somewhere down the line for everyone else.
There are always consequences for our actions for everyone along the chain and sometimes those elsewhere along the chain get tired of paying for others' actions.
Again, let me be clear... I was raised an air force brat, the daughter of crew chief, not an officer. I was a single mother with no child support for 5 years and I'm married to an early retired National Guardsman. It's not I'm made of gold. I don't have a television and I digi scrap now because I can no longer afford to paper scrap. I'm not rich and I'm not hard-hearted.

That has saved us from overdrafts more times than I can tell you! You do pay a fee (a percentage of the amount you take), but it's nothing compared to the overdraft fees we would otherwise have incurred!
Our banks offer the same thing. But you have to be approved with Regions and with National City, you can set it up to wear it will take money from your savings account if you go over your limit.
We also have a couple seperate accounts. Dh doesn't keep track of what he spends, he's a swiper
My bank charges $35 per transaction but it has saved me many times because like a lot of other people mentioned....I am a paycheck to paycheck girl.....nothing much I can do about that.

I have Bank of America. Somewhere in here someone said BoA customers were asked if they wanted it, I personally was never asked. I see both sides here and agree with both. Even though I have credit cards, bank accounts, checks, I still live from paycheck to paycheck too. I do NOT want overdraft fees on my accounts in general everyday spending, but if an emergency came up and I felt there was no other way than to overdraw an account, then yes I'd like the option to be there. That being said I'd immediately take care of it as soon as I could.
I like the idea of stopping the allowance of overdrafts with a debit card at the registers, which would take care of accidental overdrafts. As long as I would, in turn, still be given the option of withdrawing money from the ATM with an overdraft fee, and a prompt from the ATM telling me I'd be charged this overdraft fee. I, as well, would be willing to pay a larger fee since I would be withdrawing the money knowingly incurring charges. It almost seems like my Bank would be offering one of those "check into cash" services, but without all of the awful paper work.
All that said I have complained to my bank twice. Once when a deposit did not go through in time (NOW that would not happen as cash deposits are credited to your account immediately), they reversed the bank fees for me, and once when our car warranty company, Eagle Warranty, charged me our monthly fee over 8 times. That was a mess and had Bank of America not took care of me completely, I'd have been in BIG trouble. Needless to say I do not deal with Eagle warranty anymore. lol

I agree - emergencies happen - you can't help it - that's why they are called emergencies.
Since DH was w/out a job - we have $0 savings but we did start a 401K, we do the best we can. We do have an account for the very reason of an emergency - meaning they will pay it or allow us to get it at an ATM and just charge us. - Luckily we haven't had to use it!
Because I made a mistake in the account and thought I put $ in there an I actually put it in our account here (one is in a different state from before we moved) 1 song on I-tunes cost me $32.99 instead of $.99! - my mistake my stupidity - and I wish they would have denied it instead of paying it and then making $32.00 on my stupidity. BUT - I learned a lesson - check before I buy and pay attention to what account I am routing my paycheck too. Just my luck that was the very 1st time I bought an I-tunes song but I really wanted it and couldn't find it anywhere because the singer writes for TV shows etc.
Anyway, I like it.
Interestingly we just got a phone call from 2 of our credit cards and we had to agree that if the account went over the limit we would be responsible and agree to the fee. It is because of some new law. I got paperwork but it was like 3 pages long and super small print and I just didn't read it. I thought it was nice that they called but I couldn't help but thing that they usually don't let you go over your limit anyway when you are buying something.
Unfortunately, this is probably happening because of all the people that open accounts and majorly overdraw them and close them and they can never get their $ back.
Remember the days of when the grocery store would post your check on the register if you bounced one? - Well in my small town anyway. I would have been mortified! But I always read them.....
