I am starting to see a trend for me lately...using themed papers for layouts other than what they were originally intended. I have done this several times recently with various themed papers from beach to Valentines papers and I am really enjoying the challenge of trying to use them for something different. I thought it might be fun to share a fun technique with you on how I made this work for me on a recent layout I created.
I want to clarify that I do realize that some of you may not be into doing this much cut work, but there are countless other options out there on how to make these types of papers work for just about any topic you might want to scrapbook. Next week, I will be sharing a few other tips and tricks in my reveal article. So stay tuned!
For now, let's focus on the technique I used on this layout. I started with the Persuasion line by Bo Bunny because I love the colors and designs in the papers. As you can see, this line is perfect for Valentine's day or love themed layouts. I wanted to do a layout on the topic of the all the silly little sayings I use on a regular basis. I realized however, that I was going to need to figure out how to make this paper work for me. I started off using some of the papers that aren't so obviously themed. But I really loved this paper that was filled with all these cute frames.
But how could I make it work? I wanted the color of the frames, but not the lovey-dovey sayings they contained. So I thought, why not cut out the inside part of the frames and leave them open. It took some time to cut around the outside of each frame, but the inside was easily done with a craft knife. I then just grouped them along the side to create a fun border.
Another option would have been to back the opening with paper and use it as a journaling box or a place for a title. You could also keep the paper as a whole and only cut out the insides on the entire paper, place it on top of another piece of paper and have an entirely different look for your background paper and then not have to worry about a specific theme for your layout. In the end, I love the look this gave my layout and then end result was definitely not a Valetine's layout!
Hopefully this technique will get you to start looking at your themed pattern papers in a new and fresh way!

I think I have lots of patterned papers that could be cut up and used differently. Thanks for the inspiration. Loved your LO.
