Vick signs with the Eagles
I am not a sports fan at all so I totally can't see this from that perspective. And I have to admit that since I am not a sports fan, I really didnt pay much attention when the debate was going on as to whether he should be allowed to play again. But this morning it hit the news that Vick has signed with the Eagles. The Eagles are the team in MY TOWN. My facebook was lit up today with people expressing opinions and I guess you can say that I was forced to make one. I've decided that it just makes me sick to my stomach to think of this guy who knowingly participated in animal cruelty for who knows how long, being paid $1.6 million to play football and be a public figure and dare I say role model for kids in MY city! People say, 'doesnt he deserve a second chance?'. Yeah I believe in second chances, maybe he shouldnt be in prison for life or anything, but does he deserve to remain in the public view as a role model for young boys? does he deserve to make millions of dollars? Maybe if it was a one time dumb mistake like getting in a fight, or a hit and run of a dog or something, but how a person treats animals IMHO speaks to the deep down character of the person. No, I dont mean that if you dont like animals you are a bad person, but serial killers generally start with torturing animals, it says something about them as a person.

Maybe Im a bad person for not caring until now, but I just dont want this guy in my town.

I saw that he was back. IMO, he should have been in jail for years...or better yet, put him in a ring with a dog trained to fight and see how much HE likes being torn apart. I know it's sadistic on my part, but I feel he really deserves that.
I wonder, sometimes, if we ever give God a headache.

Well I am not a sports fan either but I think that 1) he should still be doing time and 2)he shouldn't be allowed back in the NFL after a conviction.

I agree with both of you. & why isn't he doing mega hours of community service for animal shelters like DWI convictions have to do with their talks to students against drinking & driving.

Im sure he'll soon be in trouble again, looking at his lifestyle, he can't stay away from trouble, sad because he is greatly talented at football

I think he should be allowed to play but, as punishment, 50 % of his earnings should go towards protecting abused animals.

I too have mixed feelings about this. I have heard that he is doing PSA's for PeTA. Now exactly whether or not these are really PSA's or fund raising promo's, I have no idea. And I certainly don't care for PeTA getting another celebrity spokesperson when their true agenda is to force a vegan lifestyle upon all of us. And they also endorse the terroristic tactics of the Animal Liberation Front, too! FYI, the FBI considers PeTA a domestic terrorist organization!

I thought he was banned from playing football again and now he is allowed to play? Maybe I was wrong in that assumption but he should be banned!

Re: Vick signs with the Eagles
For those who are great fans of professional sports I want you to know I'm not condemning you for your love of those who play professionally. I was a huge fan of the Oilers back in the "Love Ya Blue" Days. My second team was Dallas. And third was the rival of the Oilers at the time the Steelers. Then my opinion of professional sports took a down fall, a huge one. I happen to meet Bud Adams the owner of the Oilers and now Titans because we were using the same trainer for our Arabians. That man is the biggest poor sport I have ever met in my life. He's a JERK! The fans in Houston couldn't stand him, and I just gave him the benefit of the doubt on his sportsmanship. Then over the next few years the men playing in sports just seemed and still today one after another falls short in life's ethics. Needless to say I've become the biggest college sports fan since. Gig'em Aggies! and Hook 'em Horns! Yeah, I know they are rivals, but I have a house divided and I'm an Aggie fan first along with DD and a UT fan second along side my brother who is a Longhorn.

With that said I wish we could go back to coaches like Tom Landry and Bum Phillips. These men insisted their players were roll models in every area of their lives. If they couldn't they would point to the door, go through it or conform. What has happened?

On the subject of Vick! I'm all for second chances! I wouldn't have a problem with him playing again, except he has aligned himself as Ann stated with HSUS and PETA. Both have links to the terrorist organization Animal Liberation Front as Ann stated. I think Vick's poor choice of aligning himself with these animal rights organizations who wish to destroy pet ownership, hunting, and animal agriculture falls into the line of POOR ROLL MODEL. As my mother and grandmothers always told me, 'Two Wrongs Don't Make a Right!' Vick has two wrongs and PETA & HSUS are nothing more then underhanded lobbying groups. Just so that you know HSUS was forced to change their Advertising Campaign at the time Vick was caught in holding dog fights. Their advertising asked for money to help rehab the dogs. They then came out and said they should be euthanized. Poor animal lovers got hooked on false advertising which is the norm for HSUS. Because of this I don't think Vick should play.

The part most appalling to me is the fans will still buy tickets, they will support Vick, and they will "forgive" him. Disgusting! :x

I think this is a good solution.

In our society we have a justice system. He was tried, convicted, and served his time. He is now a free man and free to do anything within his probation restriction. The NFL, while may be watched by millions, is a private corporation and can hire whomever they want. Just like Wal-Mart can choose to hire who ever they want. We may not agree with it, and if you don't, then stop watching football. Just like you would stop going to wal-mart if say they hired a former bank robber. :)

Re: Vick signs with the Eagles
I agree totally Kim. I lost all interest in pro football when the Oilers left. I was ready to help tar and feather Bud Adams. But, I lost almost all interest in college football when the Southwest Conference broke up and my alma mater did not get invited to join a "Big" conference. (OK, I can see why Texas and A&M got the invites, but TCU???!!!)

I really am not all that surprised that Vick is allowed to play again after the way pro boxing kept letting Mike Tyson back in. First after he served jail time for rape - I guess the boxing commisioners didn't believe the acuser. I thought surely they would not let him back after he bit off part of Evander Holyfield's ear during a fight, but they did!! It's all about the $$$$$ :x

Yea, that was something else with the way the day after the arrest HSUS had out emails and flyers solicting $$$ for the care of Vick's siezed dogs when they never ever had them in their possession! Only those doing it never told HSUS Prez Wayne Pacelle, who was the one who told the press a few days later that he did not know where Vick's dogs were and that they should all be euthanized. If you read the fine print on any of HSUS's solicitations for money, it says that they can use your funds for any purpose they want. So even if you specify that your donation is to go for their "Low Cost Spay & Neuter Program" the funds will probably be used to pay for political lobbying and campaign donations. I remember one year somebody got their tax returns. I don't remember the exact numbers, but if you took the amount they collected for their Spay & Neuter program and then divided it by the number of dogs and cats they claimed to have fixed, it came out to them spending over $5000 for each surgery!! Even the priciest Beverly Hills vet charges less than $1000 for this procedure.

I agree with all. It is sickening that he can just get back into football and go on, making a fortune, when he is such a jerk. Anyone who can put animals together in a pit or ring and let them kill each other, and ENJOY watching it, has a major mental malfunction!

Re: Vick signs with the Eagles
I think the reason that it bothers me that he will be playing again is the kids. Kids find a "role model" in someone and then things like that happen. What is it tell kids that someone does something like that, does little time and goes back to making millions of dollars. I am all for second chances in life but your second chance may not be a profitable as the first as is the case with most convicted of any crime. Most of those who have gone to jail have lost alot and when they get out they have to work their way back up. He's getting out and getting handed what he had before with no real consequences. However I do like the 50% of his earnings thing. Wonder if he has to do community service. Stick him in a big shelter pooper scooping kennels and scrubbing walls. Definitely not a fun job - or a clean one lol. Been there done that.

I completely agree with Jenni's statement. Having worked with inmates in TDCJ as a Livestock Supervisor, these individuals are humans. Should some never be able to leave the penitentiary? Of course! In this case yes, he should be given a second chance. I love the solution of his earnings going to helping animals. He's just chosen the wrong organizations to align himself with. HSUS (Humane Society of the United States) is not a Humane Society it is an Animal Right organization that is underhanded in their promotion, wishes to stop hunting which helps keep over population of our wildlife in check, and wishes to make the price of meat so high that we are forced to a Vegan diet which for some people causes lasting physical problems. They are asking for changes in agriculture which will limit food to our citizens and we can not grow enough grains, fruit and vegetables in the quanity needed for a Vegan diet without having extreme hunger in this country. Not to mention we not only have more then enough food right now to feed our citizens but we feed 96% of the rest of the world. Remember people with hungry stomaches will do anything to put food in them. Lack of food is the number one thing that causes political and social unrest. We don't need that in this world, we already have enough problems in that area.

I agree. Our judicial system is based on the idea of rehabilitation. A judge and jury convicted him, and he served his time. Does this mean I'll be wearing a Vick shirt? No, not likely. But I'm not going to get particularly upset about the fact that he's now playing for Philly.

And honestly, this issue doesn't bother me nearly as much as the fact that teachers, social workers, and other people that work to make the world a better place get paid a fraction of your average football player... But I guess that's a whole nuther issue!
