What is your opinion?
My 9 year old gs loves to scrapbook and wants to learn to sew. Do you think a boy should be interested in these things?
I do but his dad thinks this is wrong?

Re: What is your opinion?
I will never understand why anyone feels the need to pigeonhole kids into gender stereotypes. If he wants to scrapbook and sew that makes him creative and well-rounded! And if it means something more...? So what!! I firmly believe we should encourage kids to try all sorts of things and be proud of whatever they enjoy/excel at. He will thank you later! :)

Hey, my 17 year old son just finished his senior project, which was learning to sew. He did a better job than his sister ever did :winkb:! It means that he knows how to iron his own clothes, sew buttons back on when they fall off, repair any of his clothes in the future...good life skills.

I agree with you and Jess...gender shouldn't come into the equation. Any skills or hobbies learned make for a well rounded person!

I think that if a child wishes to learn something we should teach them. I agree with many who have said, why to we try and put people in to pigeonhole of a set of old fashion ideas.

Sounds like he has an interest in art/design. He should be allowed to explore it. Maybe he will grow up to be an art teacher, or graphic designer, or some other artistic field. And sewing is a great skill to have!

I don't see what the big deal is. I personally think if they want to learn teach them. If it makes them happy and it isn't hurting anyone no big deal. Life is to short to worry about things that are beyond our control.

And honestly I wish someone would have taught my husband some of these skills- it would make my life a lot easier.

I think its great that he wants to learn those things. Some boys are just like that and it means nothing. My brother can sew way better than I can.

It's 2009 not 1960! All Children should learn to fend for themselves. whether its cooking, cleaning, sewing, Child care! WHATEVER it is it only makes there own adult life easier. Screw whatever everyone else will think.. Some men need to get some sense knocked into them. My son had to take HOME ECONOMICS last quarter and he LOVED it!!!! he is in 6th grade and all 6th graders girls and boys have to take the class.. He learned how to sew a button, how to cook and how to take care of a baby!

If he wants to learn TEACH him it will only empower him in the future...

(Sorry this topic really makes my blood boil) i was brought up in a house where the boys did absolutely nothing but make a mess. and us girls had to clean it up! My husband was also brought up that way and can't even boil water without burning the pot!

wow i feel much better now!

There is nothing wrong with that! My 9-year-old son went scrapbook shopping with me recently and bought his own supplies for some layouts he wants to do. He was a big hit at the scrapbooking store! And my husband is by far the best with a needle and thread in this house! Gender schmender! :-D

I was about to post the same.

My parents made all my clothes when my sisters & I were little. Both of them knew how to cut a pattern & hand/machine sew.

Ditto what everyone else said!

No one says anything about girls playing soccer or baseball - or even wanting to build something in the garage. So why is it taboo for our sons to want to cook or sew?

Re: What is your opinion?
Let him do it if he wants too. My dd mia loves both boy and girl toys. She has like 3 or 4 Fire trucks and a few other trucks and army men. On her 3rd bday (she 4 now) my aunt asked what mia wanted and she told her a fire truck. My Aunt was kind of like what. I said yes she like trucks. She did buy it for her. Mia also has 2 full firemen outfits, complete with the jacket, mask and other tools. She loves her firemen. =) For her 4th bday I asked what kind of decorations she wanted and she said spiderman. So thats what she got.
