I believe in having a choice - but something about this is so so WRONG

The gift certificate can be used for many things, including pelvic exams, pap smears and mamograms.
Those are good things.

I don't see anything wrong with giving someone a certificate for health services... and it's not just for women. Men use Planned Parenthood for contraceptive prescriptions, STD counseling, etc. Abortion is NOT the only service Planned Parenthood offers.

It's a GC to a clinic that performs many different tests & procedures one of which happens to be abortions. Obviously, someone is going to focus on that . It's like giving a GC to a CVS which sells OTC drugs, cosmetics, snacks or kids toys.

You could give some one cash and they could use it to have an abortion, so don't give cash.
I'll take a gc to PP. I need a mamogram!!!

That's does seem a bit odd as a gift.
Oh, I think a gift certificate for health services is fine (I wouldn't give it) but it is being taken out of context and being posted as just for abortion. Planned Parenthood should have known this was going to happen.

Gift certificate for any kind of health examine is weird IMO!
"For Christmas, I thought I would give you the gift of someone looking at your vagina."

But to give it as a Christmas gift?
Cash would be a bit more gentle

Isn't the spirit of Christmas "the thought and NOT the gift that counts?"

In a cash strapped society like today, the chances of the individual actually using the money for preventive services is very slim. At least with the certificate, they either use it or lose it. And they can always decline or return the GC back to the original giver. I know there are employees here at my workplace that would LOVE to get one since their current insurance doesn't cover all the services they require on an annual basis.

I totally agree Trish. I have a friend that has insurance for herself but not her family. The preventive things are the ones that always get put off & sometimes a simple preventive test could cause a difference of a life.MOM2SNOX wrote:Queen Mum wrote:But to give it as a Christmas gift?

definitely a good idea, because I can see people putting off preventative care - my mom always did, and if you gave her money she wouldnt have used it to go to the gyno, but I do think it would be a really odd gift. I dont see too many people taking advantage of it
Unless I asked for help with medical services - I think it would be weird to receive a gift card to a clinic.
20 years ago, I would have felt weird GIVING or RECEIVING a gift card for medical services of ANY kind. But after working in the field of communicable diseases and STD counseling, I can definitely see the benefit of a charity group/church/organization purchasing these in bulk and handing them out to those in need. If I were the group handing them out, I'd go one step further and schedule the appointment for them.davsar wrote: Unless I asked for help with medical services - I think it would be weird to receive a gift card to a clinic.
As for the weirdness of receiving it as a gift... there's practically a GIFT CARD for everything now! ;)

I agree and wonder if that was their intent - a great marketing tool. But I think people will get caught up in their personal feelings on abortion and the preventative things will get lost in the shuffle.
I must admit, it's different.
Is there nothing sacred anymore......geez....what will people think of next!
