If only this were true. I don't think the drama is going to be over for a long time - this thread is indication of that. And for the record - any other year but this one you and I would be on the same side... for some reason I just wanted you to know that. ;)

I did not vote for Obama, but that being said, I am glad our country
has finally seemed to be able to move past the race issue for once, and
try to move forward.
I would LOVE to agree with you on this one and would certainly HOPE that this was true; however, CNN referred to the states in RED below what is commonly referred to as the Mason/Dixon line as the Confederate states and those in blue above said line as the Union states not once but THREE times last night.

I haven't heard the southern states referred to in that manner since the recontruction!! This nation does not need to be divided along any measures right now, much less race or socio-economic status.

Dolphin Soul there are so many things wrong in your statement that I could be here all day. Your type of reasoning is exactly why I did not vote for Obama in the first place.
For example:  Even if you don't like Obama... Any change is a good change!!!!
No - any change is not always good. There are times when certain policies have been tried and tested and they work. There is not one of George Bush's policies that I would stand by but many of the policies that Obama has suggested would retool the constitution of this country. We tried change in the 60's and it left this country in political and social turmoil. Many of the problems that you see today in families and government are a direct result of the "change" that was tried in the 60's. The problems within our school system are a result of the changes that were tried systemically in the late 70's. Not all change is good.

In eastern philosophy they teach that wisdom and age is to be revered. Do you ever wonder why their families are so stable? Why their dynasties are so strong?
Obama is not gonna take it all away to be a bad guy, he is aiming
issues at the 'richer' b/c he feels it should be more fair for everyone.
FAIR!?! I'm a middle class wife of a military guy who is retiring next year and even I have a problem with this class warfare that has been set up by Obama.

The so-called rich - which by the way, does it include Obama himself who is worth FOUR MILLION DOLLARS or his new best friend Oprah Winrey who is the most wealthy woman in America - get there by working hard. That is the philosophy on which this great nation was built. I work hard, I study hard, I build a company, I make money.

Let's look at Wal Mart. Sam Walton came from the poorest state in the Union, had NOTHING to his name. He started a store with a concept. He built an empire and became a millionaire. AR, the state, in turn benefited from his wealth. The people here have benefited from his wealth. We have schools, scholarships, foundations, and taxes because of his wealth. THAT is how it's supposed to work.

It is NOT supposed to be about the GOVERNMENT taking away Sam's money to give to someone else without initiative. That is communism - it's not even socialism. Taking the wealth of one group and giving it to another is straight up Maxism and it should have been called out more often by the media during the election. However, the only one to do so in Florida was BOYCOTTED by the Obama campaign.

Marxism did not work in the Soviet Union and it will not work in America, or have you not studied it in your history books? It hasn't work in most of the countries where it has been tried. The redistribution of wealth is a far cry from socialized medicine - which is all that most Americans wanted.

Barrack Obama - with all of his MILLIONS - cannot even take care of his own Aunt who lives illegally in a government housing project. If he cannot take care of her, then how do YOU expect him to care of anything else this country needs.

And frankly, I don't give a rat's donkey what the rest of the world thinks about this election. In the broken, defunct electoral college he won by a "landslide" but in the popular vote he did not! This was not a mandate for change, it was a mandate to breathe a sigh of relief that George Bush will be gone - THANK GOD. On that we can all agree.

I have witnessed a lot of elections and trust me, I and a lot of others were badmouthing George Bush the day after BOTH times he won.  If there are those who wish to bad mouth Barrack Hussein Obama today then that is right of Americans in this free country - at least as long as we are still free.
:)  Same points I thought about addressing. You said it all so well though. :)

If wanting to keep the money that my husband makes is selfish, so be it.  Call me selfish.  He has a 2 year degree and is employed in a position that is predominantly held by people with 4-6 year degrees from big schools.  You know how that happened?  No silver spoon here.  His parents are IMMIGRANTS from Poland.  He got there by good old fashioned hard work.  Long hours that kept him away from me when we were first married, and even longer hours to get to the top, hours that keep him from seeing his girls as much as he would like.  Lost holidays, birthdays, and anniversaries.

So forgive me for not wanting to hand that over to someone who made the WRONG decision to get a loan for a home they couldn't afford.  For someone who made the choice to have MORE kids than they can afford.  I would have loved to have more kids.  But, being a responsible person, looking at our financials and our desired standard of living, we decided that 2 was all we could afford.  We decided the home we're in is what we want to afford.  Sure, we could qualify for a whole lot more, but we KNOW what we can/can't afford to spend on a house.  Now, thanks to Mr Spread MY Wealth, we have to worry about his job.  How much we can put away for retirement, college, etc.  We have to worry about national security and defense cuts.  Calling people selfish for wanting to keep the money they worked hard for is downright insulting and rude.

I agree with both of them on this.  It is rude and insulting.  I work hard.  I have 3 jobs to make ends meet and I don't expect or want someone ricker than me to help me in that.  But i do expect that what I work hard to make to be mine and not have to give more of it than I already do in my taxes away to those who do things without thinking and don't work hard or at all for what they have.

Re: america
Well this was not exactly what I wanted this post to be about.  I'm sorry for that.  I think that we can all agree to disagree.  I was happy and was hoping that this presidential election could bring us all closer together.

i'm sure not all the troops will be coming home overnight, it will be a step down process that will probably concentrate more in afghanistan than iraq.  I think it is a win-lose situation either way.  will we ever truly get "rid" of terrorists? no.  IMO and it is just that, my opinion, I think we step in where we are not welcome, step on toes and everyone is shocked when there is retaliation.  But I'm not one to say how that can be fixed overnight.  Some of these groups of people sit on this for years waiting for the perfect moment which 9/11 was just that.  Do I think we should totally bow down to them..no.. but 7 years is a very long time and a lot of tax dollars spent.  I've talked to some of my friends who served over there and have been gracious enough to share stories and thoughts.  The major consesus that i've gotten is that iraq is a waste of time, and the funding could be put to better use.???.  I'm not saying there is a right or a wrong but 7 years is a very long time, especially when our economy is tanking, people are losing homes, jobs, lives.  This money could be put to better use and programs for our country and its youth.  If we keep going at this pace there is a possibility that the country won't have enough money left and that is when we will get hit and hard.  I hope this never happens but eventually the bottom could fall out and we could be too vulnerable to fight off a major attack.

I for one was making really good money until a big layoff 2 years ago, thank-you Mr. Bush.  I know how good life can be until the carpet is pulled out from under your feet.  I also realize just how much money we spent.  Did I earn it? yes.  Could I have spent my money better? definately yes.  I look back with shame at how much money I wasted which could have been put to better use, I took for granted that it was always going to be there, and that i deserved those "things".  I now look on the humbler side and really see how the economy is affecting so many people and how glad I am that my husband still has his job so that we don't lose our house.  I am ashamed for what I took for granted, while so many suffered and couldn't afford a car to get to work let alone utilities to keep their house running.  I'm not saying that people deserve free handouts forever but for short term to get them on their feet and pointed in the right direction can only help our economy.  It is really sad that some people do not have the support systems or the resources that others do.  I feel that if we give people chances, education, choices and guidance that hopefully they will want to do better for themselves and their families, and given opportunities for better education can only help our economy, my hope is that we as americans can create an environment for people to be inspired to want to better themselves.  With more people earning more money our country is bound to get better and stronger and hopefully our youth will follow these examples that are set and will reach out for their dreams.

I really did not mean for this to be an attack thread.  I was happy to see change.  Obama is our president elect  and change just may be possible if people believe.  I didn't say we had to agree with everything he has to say,  but look at how far he has come just by having a dream, he basically accomplished what all thought was impossible.  I for one did not like Bush at all and really needed change, I didn't want more of the same.  But again that is my opinion and I respect those of you who voted for McCain for your own reasons.  I respect you because you had a belief and got out there and voted and made your voice heard.  Really there are pros and cons with every president, which one was best suited for the job?  we usually do not form our real opinions until we see things happen and how they affect our individual lives, my hope is that Obama can try and fix different issues that will affect everyone across the board in a positive way so that everyone can be happy (i'm sure not all the time but hopefully everyone can find something good that can come from this election).  Can it happen? the next 4 years will tell.

Right now it is over and we need to have faith that the new leader of our nation can somehow help fix things.  But we also need to make it better for ourselves and our neighbors, we can't rely solely on Obama because change has to start within ourselves.  We need to open our minds to new possibilites and listen to our hearts and souls.  Sticking together in hard times is what this country is about, love thy neighbor.  I really hope that Obama brings with him a positive change and that we can all find some good in the hard work he will be doing.  This is a time for history to take a new path and with it hopefully we can all find something good.  If it is one thing I have learned in the last couple of years is that the best things in life are free and that they often get taken for granted the most, until a tradgedy happens...sometimes it takes a mistake or a tradgedy to really open our eyes and see what is really important in the here and now and standing right in front of us.  So what are you thankful for?  What really matters to you?  What are the little things that make you smile?  The election is over and for just a little while please share with everyone else things that you are thankful for in your lives, no matter how trivial they are, I'd love to hear them!

I'm thankful for finding my dh and that we have a love that is so strong.
I'm thankful for having shelter over my head
I'm thankful that I have enough to eat in my fridge, and i'm also thankful that I have a fridge
I'm thankful for having a table to eat on so that I don't have to eat on the ground or under a bridge
I'm thankful that I do not have a mental illness that would hamper my chances of a normal life
i'm thankful for a very caring family and the examples that my parents set for me, to make me want to do more with my life and give back to my community
i'm thankful every single day for my furbabies that make my life that much more complete
i'm thankful for the chance of going back to school and learning a new profession and the dream of helping others when i am finished
I am thankful for deoderant, perfume, tampons (could you even imagine not having anything?), hairbrushes, clips, scrunchies, soap, shampoo, conditioner, microwave, lights, bed, car, paper, pens, highlighters, being able to take a shower etc.
I am thankful for being able to get out of bed everyday and being able to make choices about my day
I am thankful for being able to have my own opinion and thoughts
I am thankful that I live in a country that is full of so many dreams and opportunities!
and most importantly I am thankful for my fellow americans who believe in their country and who believe that we are worth protecting and fight for us in war.  I pray that they are unhurt and can make it home safe to their families.  I pray that they are not lonely.  I pray that they can come back to us without nightmares.  I pray that they know how much we appreciate how much they sacrifice for our country.

I'll get off my soapbox now and let someone else have a turn.  If you had the patience to read all the way through this, big hugs and I hope that you are having a wonderful day and that tommorrow will be even brighter for you!

Well said.

And may I mention.  Education is not alwaysthe answer.  HARD WORK is.  My grandparents were not educated, in fact, my grandmother didn't even graduate from high school, yet managed to put 2 kids all the way through private school AND college.  How?  HARD WORK!  My grandfather worked his butt off in the oilfield, and my grandmother worked at a grocery store.  McDonald's isn't paying the bills?  Then find another, better paying job that you can do, oh but wait, you have to work to get a job too.  Hmpf I forgot...

Totally agree. DH and I have worked hard to get where we are. His Dad worked hard to start a business when dh was very young, and worked many long hours to build that business up to be able to make a some extra money to take dh's mom on a trip to Europe one day. He worked hard and they were finally able to take their first trip... 19 years later. DH's mom worked at the business too, and dh worked there when he was young and then went to college, got a degree, and eventually took over the business when his dad passed away. I actually met him while working a summer job there, and we eventually got married. I worked at the business until our first child was born, and then became a SAHM. He ran the business and believe me the long hours are only part of it. There were so many stresses and situations to deal with that I won't even go into. He developed health issues, and the stress was not good for him. Many years later we finally sold the business because the stress was not good for his health. So... we now should be penalized for everything that we have that is a result of his hard work and his dad's and mom's hard work and sacrifices? You bet it's not fair. Bill Clinton once said when he was president... if you make more, you should contribute more. Well... news flash... we already do... just by pure percentage alone! But to have to give even more than we already do because we worked so hard and dh put his life into the business so we could have a comfortable future... sorry... I don't buy that.

Hoping not to offend anyone by this, but this is a sore spot for me. It's not like we are rolling in it or anything like that, but I feel very lucky to have my wonderful dh and so proud for what we have because of his hard work. So yes, we may have it better than some, but it was not just handed to us. We share by donating to causes and foundations that we are passionate about, and at the holidays I always load up a cart for the Toys for Tots, and load up a supermarket cart when there is a food drive. We do contribute to the less fortunate. So yes, I agree, it is very unfair to be called selfish.

Interesting! That's exactly what Barack Obama went through. Grandparents & a mother that worked very hard to help put Barack where he is today. Yet he faces so much criticism & some people that are not even willing to give him a chance.
