Nice topic eh?
I have a lump behind my ear. I had dh look at it and he says it is a boil and I need to pop it.
If you have ever had one did you pop it or will it just go away on its own??
OMGosh - I used to get these ALL of the time when I was younger - not so much any more. They were horrible and hurt like, well, hell! Really.
I was always told NOT to prick them because the infection would spread and cause more. I have no idea if that is true or not because I'm from the south and wive's tails are rampant. I just never did burst them.
There is a boil cream that you can get at most pharmacies. It is horrible stuff that looks like black tar but immediately takes away the pain and gets rid of them.
Are you sure it's a boil and not an infected hair folicle?

It is right behind my earlobe (in the crevice) where no hair grows (at least I hope not!). I thought it might be a large pimple but it feels different and dh says it doesn't look like a pimple. I'll check the pharmacy tomorrow for the tar like cream. Are you sure it's a boil and not an infected hair folicle?
Yeah... that's what it sounds like.
The cream actually has "boil" in the name so it's not hard to find. I'm sorry you have this. I remember how much they hurt.

Don't pop it whatever it is... When I worked in Dermatology, we used to remove sebaceous cysts behind the ears all the time. They'd become red, inflamed and then harden. The dermatologist would numb the area, make an incision and remove the cyst sac entirely otherwise it would return. Quite common.
Cyst sac? Oh barf. The dermatologist would numb the area, make an incision and remove the cyst sac entirely otherwise it would return.
Trust me... it was one of the least liked procedures to assist with.. And it wasn't the actual sac that made you barf. It was the smell. Can't have a weak gag reflex!bumblebby wrote:Cyst sac? WWaaahhhhhh! I don't want a stink sac!!And it wasn't the actual sac that made you barf. It was the smell. Can't have a weak gag reflex!
And you thought having a boil was gross. I'd take boils over stinky sacs!
Me too!!And you thought having a boil was gross. I'd take boils over stinky sacs!
yeah I have had a boil or two, they are painful, but they always go away in a day or two. DON'T pop it!!!!
-If it's scrappy it makes me happy!
Could you use a warm compress so it pops on it's own? Then use neosporin.
DO NOT POP!
