just opened my hospital bills...$17,000!!!!
I only owe $1208 but still...wowzers i was thinking maybe a couple hundred...ouch! jeez i coulda taken a trip for cheaper

It's scary isn't it? I think it is sad that people who have serious illnesses have to worry about how they are going to pay rather than focus on getting well.

Considering how many days you were in there that's not bad. My hospital bill from when I had my surgery (which includes a trip to the ER, a consult with the doctor, the surgery, and a one night stay in the hospital) was around $15,000. Plus we had to hang around Seattle an extra 4 days after surgery, so add in car rental, hotel, food, and a change fee on my ticket . . . it ended up being close to $20,000. No insurance. I should have just had DH push the wheel chair I was in into the traffic . . . then no bills.

I know...it's beyond ridiculous. But what can you do about it?

With my first guy, there was potential for heart problems. So he was in the NICU for 4 days for observation. Nothing extra was done, they were just monitoring his oxygen stats. The bill was over $10,000.

The really sad thing is how much money you have to pay each month for insurance and they hardly cover anything. Where does all the money go?

My daughter had her gall bladder removed a couple of months ago. It was a day surgery - she went in at about 11 AM, had it done with the laprascope and went home about 5:30 PM. She got her bill, and it was just over $12,000. She does have insurance, though. I think it covered 80%.

That sucks! I'm going through something similar to what Laura said. I have a blood disorder and have to get transfusions very couple of months. Now I've got to find a way to pay for the few I've had and try to convince them to schedule me for another one. It's really stressful when I'm already tight on money every month and now I've got an extra few thousand to try to pay as well....I'm greatful for healthcare cuz there is no way I could ever pay the medical bills if I didn't have it.
