I haven't read the Harry Potter books, but I have seen the craze...What do you think about Rowlings "outing" Dumbledore? Do you think it was true all along (if you read the books, was it hinted to)? Do you think it was just to stir stuff up? How do you think the anti-gay Potter followers will react? Not sure if this is much of a "debate" topic... but anyway...

I didn't really see the point of that unless she just wanted some more press....I mean they hardly get any press at all!!!

I'm not sure why she felt like she had to bring this up now.   My 12 yr old reads them and loves them.  BUT this is not a topic we have discussed as of yet, and this is NOT the way to start it either.I don't know if it was hinted to in the books, I read them so fast because I couldn't wait to see what was going to happen in the next chapter.  I will be rereading them soon so I will see.

I don't think it was hinted at in the books, but apparently there was a line in one of the movie scripts (the 6th one, I think) about Dumbledore and a girl from his past, and Jo Rowling had to "out" him to the director at that time.

So - you are saying that JR Rowling has announced that Dumbledore is gay?

And the purpose her her announcing this is...?

WHat difference does it make?     Why would this make a difference to the story?   There was no need for her to do this!

The only reason I can see is to get people talking about her books again.  Now it will be in the news for a week or so and people will go back through all the books trying to see where she got that.  There was NO real reason for doing this other than being a publicity whore.BTW...I love the books and have read them all.Shelly

I have read all the books several times. I can't remember anything that pointed to Dumbledore being gay. He did have a close friend after his mother's death but it reads like they were just friends. I think the woman just wants attention. She has said the last book was the end of the Harry saga. What now is she going to out Dumbledore and write a series showing another side of Hogwarts? Give me a break.

How unnecessary.  This is disappointing. Money sure does change people.

It bugs me because it doesn't seem like there's any literary integrity. It seems like it was thrown in there to get people talking and sell more books. It just doesn't seem to "fit" with the rest of the story. IT be one thing if sexuality was a constant theme in all the Harry Potter books, but it hasn't been.Jr

Sorry but I just don't understand why people are upset about this.  Keep in mind:1.) As mentioned before: during the making of the 6th movie the director wrote in a love interest for Dumbledore.  JKR had to "out" Dumbledore at this point in order to keep the integrity of the story.2.) This was brought to much more widespread attention because she was giving a Q and A to a group and someone *specifically* asked if Dumbledore was in a relationship.  JK simply said he was gay and that was her backstory. I personally never thought much about Dumbledore's sexuality one way or another. His role in the story really didn't need to be about who he was involved with romantically.  BUT... every author has built up his or her characters' pasts in order to write a complete and multi dimensional character.  I in no way see how her announcement of Dumbledore's orientation was about being a "media whore".  She was asked... it came up several times... she was able to reveal it finally now that the books are done.  Keep in mind also that fans are constantly wanting more information from her... they are unwilling and sad to let the story go.  It is not her who perpetuates the attention....after all, she has made SO much money at this point that she donates most of what is still coming in. Just my opinion!

I don't know what Dumbledore's sexuality has to do with anything in the story, really.

WHo cares - the guy was a hundred years old!

In the books it was never mentioned, implied or otherwise. Why not just reply, " What did you think." A much more satisfying answer. Those who want to think about Dumbledore's sex life can make what they want of it. For those who never thought about it or don't care why add to the story when the book is finished?

I think her point was showing that a person's orientation has nothing to do with how you feel about them... that a person can be someone you value for who they are and that if you find out later that they are gay it shouldn't matter.

My friend at work and I were just talking about this today. She said she always kind of wondered, but I don't remember reading anything that hinted about Dumbledore.Personally, I don't care one way or the other.  I read that JK is going to be putting together a "definitive" encyclopedia of all things Potter, maybe she'll go into that more there.
