NOVEMBER Creative Team Challenges
Ahhh, all the spooky stuff is done and now we are getting ready to be thankful for what we have.  The weather is changing, as are the leaves.  If you ask me, it's taken a LONG time for those leaves to turn colors this season. One thing that hasn't changed, and for which many of you are thankful, is the amount of challenges that the ACOT Creative Team Members have been busy coming up with for you.  Hopefully, you can find some that will inspire you to go scrap!  Show us what you create with these!# # # # #

AD INSPIRATION CHALLENGE by MamaK321 (Kristianne)

Inspiration:  the act of influencing or suggesting opinions : to draw forth or bring out : an inspiring agent or influence

Ad inspiration is like a step up from sketches. There is a basic sketch that you can pull out and use on your own layout but there are also a few other pieces to take inspiration from such as colors, patterns, title or keywords, theme, font styles, and element placement. You can copy a design straight from the ad or you can alter a design to fit your own layout. Most ads are 8.5x11" but you can adapt the design to fit any size. Remember, this is not a sketch and you are not required to follow every detail. The key is to really LOOK at the ad and find the pieces that INSPIRE you!

Make an altered item using wood and rub-ons!!!  Have fun and let's see what you can create!

Make a card in a non-traditional shape.  Any theme is fine just use a different shape for your card other than a rectangle.  I used a balloon shape to make this birthday card. THIS CHALLENGE LAYOUT:  Paper or Digital

COLOR CHALLENGE by Beth-W (Beth)

Fall is a pretty time of year with all of the leaves changing and I always think of the colors of changing leaves as fall colors- red, orange, yellow and brown.  For the color challenge, I picked some less traditional fall colors.  The challenge is to do a LO in brown, blue and orange.  It is a color challenge, (not theme) so your LO doesn't have to be fall themed unless you want it to be.  I just happened to have some great pictures of a fall event that I wanted to scrap.

DIGITAL BLENDING CHALLENGE by m1218p (Marci)Though I’ve been scrapping for several years, I’ve never posted a blended layout until the last few weeks.  Why?  Because they scared me.  They were new and different and I didn’t know what I was doing and I felt I just couldn’t make them look right.  But recently I ran across a discussion online that cleared up the fog as to what to do and I’ve been having a ball creating digital blended layouts ever since.  So, I thought I’d share the fun.

I use PSE4 so those are the instructions I’m going to give.  If you use another program, ask your friends, search out a tutorial on line, or whatever is necessary.  I promise you it will be worthwhile.

You will need to find Layer Styles, the Opacity slider, and your eraser.

Start by editing the photo you want to blend into the background.  Then copy and paste it onto your selected background paper.  If you’re new to blending, you may be happier with a lighter colored bg paper.  At the top of the Layers Palette, you will see “Normal” and a down arrow located next to it.  With your photo layer selected, click on the down arrow.  I would suggest Hard Light as the category you want to use, but you can try a few others, just to see the effect each achieves with your photo.  When you have selected the one you like best, move on to the Opacity slider.  It is located just to the right of the down arrow you previously clicked.  You want your bg paper to show through the photo, so manipulate the opacity of your photo til you like the effect you achieve.

Actually, you’re pretty much done.  You have just one problem left……hard edges.  Since the desired effect is to have the photo fade into the background, the last thing you need is to have a hard edge hanging around.  You either have to disguise it or get rid of it.  You can disguise it with an appropriately placed ribbon or other embellishment, but why not get rid of it altogether?  Select your eraser tool from the tool bar.  You want to select a soft brush and set your opacity to about 50%.  Being sure you have your reduced opacity photo layer selected, erase those hard edges!  Now you can add other layers to your creation—more photos (blended or not), embellishments, title, or journaling.  One of the great things about blended photos is that they don’t have to be perfect photos.  Since you’re going to be erasing part of them anyway, maybe you can get rid of those strangers in the background or Uncle Charlie’s arm that juts into the photo or last week’s laundry that is laying around in the background.  It’s okay if they’re a bit “noisy”.  It won’t show when your blending and erasing is complete.  Now you can scrap some photos you thought were unscrappable and you have a whole new technique in your arsenal.

# # # # #FAITHBOOK CHALLENGE by Keling (Sara)

Scrapping is about more than just the memories of events; it can also be a great way to pass what you believe on to your children and grandchildren.

So, this month, we want to start right at the beginning - What do you believe?  Feel free to include your own journaling, Bible verses, the 10 Commandments or a Creed.

I have taken the text from my church's doctrinal stance and re-written it in my own words.  There was so much, it took up 2 pages!  But, don't worry about that - one page is plenty if that's all you fill!

# # # # #JOURNALING CHALLENGE by Mommybruno (Cassandra)UN-thankful
Once Thanksgiving month rolls around, everyone starts listing all the things they're thankful for. It's pretty easy to make a quick list of all the good stuff in your life (like chocolate and Dr. House!). My challenge to you is to pick something you're UN-thankful for, and find a way to be thankful for it. So start checking out some of the storm clouds in your life and see if you can find that silver lining hiding underneath!

LOUD AND PROUD CHALLENGE by scrapperjade (Jaedyn), Digital Guest CT

We all have something we are extremely proud of!  Whether it was our own accomplishment, watching our baby take their first steps, our teenager doing something nice for someone else, our husbands finally getting that big promotion...  I want you to scrap your proudest moment.  It doesn't matter if you don't have photos.  The only thing required is journalling.  It doesn't have to be extensive, but I do want to some... what is your moment??

OUTSIDE YOUR BOX CHALLENGE by suslvgeo (Susan)

Do you ever notice you tend to do the same safe zone things over and over again? Even though you have bought supplies to branch out a bit? Those supplies or tactics...need some dusting off. Lets see what you can do. Try something you are not normally comfortable doing. You might just like it. :)

RULES:  Must do something that is outside of your box. If you don't normally sew on your layouts... try it.  If you don't normally use your chalks, try it. etc...

# # # # # PANORAMIC PHOTO CHALLENGE by MamaK321 (Kristi)

One of my favorite things about digital scrapbooking is that we're not limited in the size of our photos. You can easily stretch a photo to span the length or width of any sized layout.  For this challenge, I would like you to create a 12x12 or 8.5x11 layout using a panoramic photo that reaches from one side of your page to the other.THIS CHALLENGE LAYOUT:  Paper or Digital# # # # #PHOTOGRAPHY CHALLENGE by nun69 (Angie)

So, what are the things you are thankful for?  For me it is my children and the joy they give me even when I am having a bad day... So let's see photos of those things you are so most thankful for, whether it be precious heirlooms, your pets, your children, your job, your life, or whatever it is you are so thankful for in your life!

SCRAP A SOUND CHALLENGE by Keling (Sara)

Scrapping the abstract can be hard, but I think you're up to the challenge!

Everywhere we go, we are surrounded by sound, and many sounds bring back wonderful memories, whether its the song from our first dance, or the sound of a train in the distance. This month, try and recreate a special sound using words and pictures. Use different literary tricks, such as alliteration or onomatopoeia to recreate your sound in your journaling.

In my example, the simple click. click. click. of a car's indicators was all it took, in conjunction with the flashing on and off of the yellow light, as portrayed by the pictures.

THEME CHALLENGE by 4peasinourpod (Pam)

BOOKS!  As the weather gets cooler in most areas, and downright cold in others, doesn't getting cozy with a nice book sound awesome?  This month our theme challenges is taken straight from those pages!  Whether it be the title, a quote, or a picture of your favorite reading spot or book, let's celebrate the joy that we get from our library!

My layout shows Delaney doing the "itsy bitsy spider"...the hand motions to her favorite book as a baby.  It was a board book, and simple enough that all the other children could read it to her.  We would take turns reading it over and over again!

USE UP YOUR STASH CHALLENGE by katarria (Kathy)

I used to have a tiny drawer for my clear ghost alphabets.  Then the clear embellishments started to take over and I made more space - what started as a few alphabets grew into a collection of clear letters, flowers, and shapes!  This month I want to see you use some sort of clear embellishments - alphabets, shapes, etc... On my layout I used clear flowers by Making Memories to dress up the chipboard frame.  I love the way clear stuff is taking off right now so I've gotta make room to hoard more of it!

Do you have to follow the sketches exactly as they are? For instance, could I substitue an embellie or journaling block where it says photo?

Tracy, these challenges are here to inspire you.   As it is NOT a "contest" I would suggest you use your interpretation of the sketch to "work" for you.

Tracy, they do a random drawing for points based on participation only....you get one entry for each challenge you do, so I think you can play with the sketch and do whatever works for you.

Ok, another question. I'm really liking the circular sketch. I never do circles, (I prefer sleek, linear designs) so...can I submit one layout for more than one challenge? If I use that sketch it would work for the sketch challenge and the Outside your Box challenge.
On a molecular level, I'm very busy.

Tracy, if you use the same layout for more than one challenge...you only get ONE entry in to the "pot."The more challenges / layouts / altered art / cards / photography entries you submit....each NEW and separate one is counted separately....so  you have a better chance of the random number selector selecting your number / name combo.
