looking for a new kitty
We are in the beginning search for a new kitty~ I have been looking at getting a purebred kitten, I really love the ragamuffin breed. Does anyone have one or know of anyone who does? I really want to make sure and get a lovey kitty that is going to be a lap kitty and real lovey (I have 2 cats now that really only love the kids)   This is a pic i found online, arn't they precious!

That kitten is adorable - unfortunately for me, I am allergic to them - so we are a doggie family!

I had one and loved her--but she wasn't so lovable.I don't think you can pick a "loving" cat by breed. There are SO many variables that affect how they react.

It is so hard to pick a "lovey" cat. The cat I currently have was soooo lovable when I first got her. She wanted to be in my lap every minute. Now I can hardly get my hands on her and she only gets in your lap when SHE wants to.

Is that the breed that are all "floppy" when you pick them up? There was a breed I was reading about where when you pick them up, they flop in your arms (maybe its a ragdoll, now that I think about it) and they are said to have the personality of a dog and needs the same attention as a dog (they will follow family members around everywhere)>

I just adopted a kitty, but I got her from the Humane Society...I really wanted a purebred, but after I saw all those tiny kittens in those small cramped cages at the shelter, I didn't have the heart to spend hundreds on a purebred and leave all those kitties there!!!

I don't know much about purebreed cats cause I have always had "mutts" but if you want a lap cat for sure get a male.  They are move affectinate and willing to take your love when you want to give it.  Females tend to only want it when they want it.

Yeah, there are SOOO many adorable kittens at your local shelter that are just dying to be adopted!  Actually, dying might be right, if you have a kill shelter in your area!  Plus, you only have to pay a small adoption fee.  Plus, all of the genetic variation in a non-purebred kitty means he/she will possibly have less health problems and maybe be smarter! Please consider adoption from a shelter!  Your sweet new kitty will thank you!

I think we're in the same boat as you, Jessica.  My ds' cat has been gone for 5 months now, and we are thinking of a new playmate for dd's cat.  We keep weighing the idea back and forth.  Don't think we'll get a pure bred, though.  I'd love to have one, but our lifestyle wouldn't be right for it.  I've been searching the papers for kittens and may do as Leslie suggests and got to the local humane society.

Unless you are going to bred the cat you might consider putting a call into local shelters. Ours keep lists of families who are looking for specific animals and when they come in you get a call.We got Max at the shelter. He already had all his shots, was "fixed" and had been declawed. Because he was declawed the shelter knew he had to go to a family who would not allow him outside. He is such a good and loving cat. I am so glad we "rescued" him.

Well, all my boys i've had have come from a shelter or have come in as strays. The last kitty i got was from the humane society and was a gift for my dd but he has taken to being my ds cat. I actually went to the humane society this a.m. and took ds (4) I explained to him how these kitties have to stay in these cages and don't have families to love them, or beds to sleep in other then the cages. After going there I am thinking more that i'll go that route, I know that the purebreds will always get adopted, but maybe the shelter ones dont' have the same chance. Ill keep ya'll updated

Out of all the breeds I have owned the Somali is the most affectionate to the point of being obnoxious at times.  Mine would take a running leap to sit on my shoulder and crawl in my lap every time I sat on the couch.   My favortie breed is the Norwegian Forest cat.  They are like highly intelligent dogs that smell good and use a litter box.  My weegie comes when I call him, will wake me up if one of my kids has a fever(even when the child themselves is fast asleep) and lays next to me to cuddle every morning and night. Here's a pic of a Somali:

I have one of those "floppy" males - Maddie - he was from a kill shelter & I've had him since college. My other cat - Pia - is super sweet but doesn't like to be picked up or cuddled quite as much.  She's from the Humane Society. If you really have your heart set on a purebred, then check out www.petfinder.com and see if you can adopt one that's a year or two old.  That way you'll already know personality traits & have the type of cat you want.

I have personally owned a Ragdoll named Snow White. Ragdolls are not affectionate cats at all. I worked for a vet that one of our main clients owned a cattery in which she bred Ragdolls and Sphynx. In the 2 years I worked at the vet and came across hundred of her Ragdolls (she was the only official Ragdool breeder in Ca and all of her cats came from England, where ragdolls originated), none of her Ragdolls were friendly, even as kittens. They tend to be aloof. Ragdolls, if they are affectionate, tend to bond to one person. They are not a family friendly breed. A family friendly breed of cat is the Abyssinian.

We have an Egyptian Mau and a Savannah.  The Mau is a gorgeous cat, very smart, has great personality traits but being a lovey lap cat isn't one of them.  Our Savannah can be lovey, plays fetch, is very needy of his people, but isn't a lap cat.  He is a giant clumbsy, ungraceful cat who is more like a dog, lol, but a wonderful cat. These are the 2  breeds I can share info about.  Sorry, I don't know about the Ragdolls.

My SIL has 1 (used to have 2, one passed away) Himalayians. They are not very loving and they hide most of the time.We have had only  mutt cats. The last three that we had were all loveable. The one that was mostly mine (a male)  would sit at my feet and cry for me to come to bed and he slept in between our pillows.  The one that was mostly dh's (also a male) would sleep in his lap all the time.  Their sister would lay on your lap if you weren't paying her any attention but not for very long.

He isn't old enough to be adopted but it should be 2-3 weeks. I cant wait to see him, i'll take my camera and take more pics of him if we do down there.

He is adorable.. but I suggest you Don't get a purebreed cat unless you are going to show it and everything. The cost of them are unbelievable and there is no way to say that a particular breed is a more loving animal. You can go to your local shetler and adopt Beautiful cats that will be loving and playful. There are some at the shelter I volunteer for that are mixes but they are the most breath taking cats I have seen b/c of how rare they are due to the mixes.  And the ragamuffin breeds look to be mixed with the siamese breeds. And they are not the most loving animals. Can be very territorial.I know its hard to believe, but we have found that black cats are the most loving and affectionate.Best advice I can give you is to go somewhere and spend a good 15-20 min. with the cat to see how you bond. Because they can be the most adorable thing on earth and also the meaniest. Good luck with your searches.
