Yes, they're conveniently small units. That is ideal for slower computers (ones that perhaps struggled with deadlines for HPF and FAAH). The minimum requirements are as close to "any computer" as we are ever going to get, I think.

The way the algorithm works probably means that the work units can be packaged into conveniently sized lumps, rather than being restricted by (for example) the amount of work required to process one molecule.
