biggrin Points System

I have just did a multi member comparison between myself (crooks_uk) and another member of my team (Ian_UK). I have more than four times his run time and he has almost as many points as me.

I am using UD on three main machines which run 24/7, all above 2GHz P4 and 1GB memory and a few Centrino Laptops that are used on a daily basis.

The stats seam remarkably different, even when compared with members with similar runtime to myself.

Is this possible?

Re: Points System

Put your highest mark machine against my E6600 or one of many others for runtime I may do twice as many WU`s as you !

Not meant offensively. Are the machines equal is the important bit !

Re: Points System

Comparing machines in a true apples to apples manner is difficult. Even with two identical machines, what else if anything that goes on on the computer can affect how much they crunch, and if at the right time, the benchmarks that are set. Given the machines you mention though, I'd suggest you take a look at the posts in the FAQ about BOINC and look at switching to it. It will better utilize the capabilities of those machines than UD.

Re: Points System

Looking at my own stats, I'm 1149th in terms of total run-time, but 261 in terms of points. It comes from the fact that I'm running machines well in excess of the average cruncher on the grid. Faster machine=more work(points) in less time.

Also, maybe your team member uses BOINC. It's well known that BOINC claims more points than UD.

Re: Points System

It sounds like BIONC is the only way forward for most members. Both UD and BIONC should be equal.

It seams that UD has not been (or will ever be developed) like BIONC has been. In a competative market, UD is like betamax and BIONC is like VHS.

If UD will not develop its software to take advantage of 64 bit, dual or four cores, etc. then maybe the link on the home page of world community grid should only give the option of downloading BIONC as it is better capable of utilising the unused cycles of a PC which should be the ultimate goal. UD is already sofar behind and by the looks of things there is no danger in it ever taking the world by storm - or even coming close to keeping pace.

Any views are welcome.

Re: Points System

The WCG agent is based on United Devices Grid MP 3.0. This is the same platform used by grid.org. United Devices are now up to Grid MP 5.1. As far as I am aware, WCG have not made an upgrade decision yet.

However, it is interesting to note that grid.org have not yet upgraded, and they are run by United Devices.
