BOINC causing instant reboot

I have installed BOINC on a Gateway E3400 with a 5gb drive with the drive partitioned into 4 virtual drives, with BOINC installed on the E Drive, 930 mhz processor, Windows 2000. The system appears to download a FAAH wu, and once it is downloaded the system immediately reboots. I have not been able to get the messages from right before it reboots, but do have these messages from the last time I manually started BOINC.

4 times it has attached to projects and now I appear to have 4 separate BOINC devices, none of which appear to be functioning. At this point BOINC wants to attach to the project again, but I am afraid it will just create another device and reboot again. Should I just give up on this box, reinstall the operating system, or try another hard drive which is not partioned ??? I have about 4 more of these boxes I would like to get running, but I have to get this one done first. Any advice appreciated.

Thanks

Re: BOINC causing instant reboot

You don't really have enough memory to be safely running any of the current WCG projects. That said, it shouldn't be rebooting, either.

How old is the Windows installation? Can this computer run other programs that use 100% CPU continuously? It is possible you have a hardware issue.

I suggest you wait until the next project launch before continuing with these low-spec computers.

Re: BOINC causing instant reboot

Thanks for the info. The only reason I tried it is I saw a reply one of Sekerob's posts where someone had a machine with even lower specs than this one that actually worked, so I thought I would give it a try. sad sad The windows 2000 install is fully up to date with a current updates. I have run the machine with other apps and it has not exibited this kind of behavior. However, I will wait until some other projects come on line before trying it again. I will also probably increase the memory to 256mb or try another drive that is not partioned before retrying. smile

(edit)I will try something to max out the cpu and see if that causes any problems.

Cheers

Re: BOINC causing instant reboot

I did wait for the Genome project before I fired up the old boxes. I have three of them running now and although they are not too fast, they are running flawlessly on the lower spec project. Two are PIII's(900 and 600mhz) and one is a PII (300mhz).Glad to be able to put them to use.

Cheers
