I was wondering how much the program ends up uploading, say in an 24 hour period. I am at a University, and if a computer uploads more than 600 MB in 24 hours, that person gets his or her bandwidth limited. After multiple infractions, this could lead to a 'strike' sort of on a three 'strike' system. So I was wondering if the grid program does an excessive amount of uploading, or if there is a way to regulate uploading to stay under the 600 MB limit.

The upload size varies between the different projects we run at WCG. Also, the ultimate amount you upload will depend on how fast you can process work.
Now, if you were to spare all of your allocation for WCG, then WCG would never be able to fill it. But I imagine that you will only want to use a small fraction of your 600 MB for WCG work. If I recall correctly, the FAAH uploads are tiny. The HPF2 uploads may be a little larger. Frankly, I don't see it ever being a problem. The only way you will find out how much your setup uploads would be to monitor it for 24 hours. |

Hi fshroyer,
----------------------------------------I understand your college admin.....P2P file sharing could go rampant, but maybe u could get them convinced, that this is a good cause, spread the word and run a University Team of crunchers for a good cause. cheers

Hi fshroyer, Thanks for the replies guys, I think that if I got "caught" uploading I could probably explain that it wasn't p2p and it would be ok. They give multiple warnings before taking action anyways. I'll do my best to spread the word about WCG, it is a neat projectI understand your college admin.....P2P file sharing could go rampant, but maybe u could get them convinced, that this is a good cause, spread the word and run a University Team of crunchers for a good cause. cheers |

Hi fshroyer
I think that if I got "caught" uploading I could probably explain I don't represent WCG, but it is a long held understanding with DC projects, not to install without the owners full permission and knowledge. Doing so can cause problems. If a 'bug' gets into your university system and WCG software is found, it will be blamed. This would bring WCG into disrepute and do enormous damage to the project!! Please get permission before installing on someone elses equipment! Cheers. ozylynx ![]() |

Hi fshroyer Oh, this is just on my own personal laptop, but I would be using the university's internet connection.I think that if I got "caught" uploading I could probably explain I don't represent WCG, but it is a long held understanding with DC projects, not to install without the owners full permission and knowledge. Most universities allow the execution of arbitrary code. They have to; students need to use all sorts of software for perfectly good reasons.
If in doubt, check your computer use policy. Explicit permission is always best, but implicit permission is fine. |
