rose A few Device Profile / Agent improvement suggestions

1) Allow the Device Profiles to indicate a desired CPU usage during various time slots. That would allow more CPU usage during their off-hours, since folks could crank it up to 100% then.

2) Multi-CPU capable agents. Separate threads for independent work units seem pretty straightforward. (or maybe I oversimplify the issue)

3) Allow ranking of the available projects. This would discourage those with a preference for one project from selecting just that one project. Instead they could rank it highest, and their agents would automatically cut over to 2nd, 3rd, etc choices (rather than just turning off).

I'd be happy to help design the web UI (my email is @yahoo.com with mikecepek in front).

Overall: Thank you for making it relatively easy and painless for putting my spare cycles to good use.

Re: A few Device Profile / Agent improvement suggestions

Hi mcepek

1. is very interesting, i'd second that. Problem is the UD Agent, which i presume you are talking about, is not build by WCG, thus no grip on it and United Devices who owns the agent software treats it with little interest....thus see below.

2/3 is already catered for if u switch to the BOINC agent. It can use as many CPU cores that u want it to use. Than, if e.g. Help Defeat Cancer runs low, it can switch over to whatever other projects there are available.

And if u are a daredevil, developers version 5.6.5 has a manual control for the preferences override file to throttle the CPU locally, but there is no day/night type switching for that available and could likely only happen at the start of a new workunit or by restarting BOINC.

that in brief

cheers
