I'm starting to wonder if this is some sort of scam :( I've been trying to spread the word about this project and most people are saying its another internet scam. How do we know this isnt a scam?
I didnt join until I saw Linux was a partner of this project. The other day I checked out how many members are in team Linux and there were only 3. I would think there would be a lot more. I listened to the Cancer podcast with some people and most of the people thought it sounded like actors. How do we know? Is there a phone number we can call to ask questions? Have any of you ever called them to see if this is legit? |

The most people I ask are my friends, teachers, and family members. I dont say much I just show them the website.
I dont understand how BOINCstats will show people this project isnt a scam. Is this research lab trying to make drugs against HIV? Have they made any other drugs before? |

The Lab (Scripps Institute) that runs the project is sponsored by the National Institutes of Health which is the top healthcare research institution in the U.S. and probably in the world. See the link and the sponsors at the bottom:
http://mgl.scripps.edu/projects Therefore, I am pretty sure they are not a scam. Here is their address and telephone/fax for confirmation: Address: Molecular Graphics Laboratory Department of Molecular Biology, MB-5 The Scripps Research Institute 10550 North Torrey Pines Road La Jolla, CA 92037-1000 USA Telephone: (858) 784-2526 Fax: (858) 784-2860 |

Click on the "Powered by IBM" graphic, and you will be taken to this official IBM page on the IBM website.
As a Community Advisor, I also have contact details for some of the people at IBM who run the grid. All official IBM email addresses and IBM employees. |

What exactly would they be scamming us out of? Perhaps some really smart med student with friends at the Scripps Institute has developed this website as a ploy to compute his med school homework???
I guess I just dont understand what anyone would gain from scamming someone out of computer time... |

There at per this link http://nl.boincstats.com/stats/host_os_stats.php?pr=wcg&st=0 16067 Linux crunchers for World Community Grid Active at time of this post, Not 3 that chose to join the Linux team. Following this Button shown on each screen of this forum, produces this text: FightAIDS@Home (Launched November 21, 2005) FightAIDS@Home is a project focused on using computation methods to identify candidate drugs that have the right shape and chemical characteristics to block HIV protease. This approach is called "Structure-Based Drug Design", and according to the National Institute of General Medical Sciences , it has already had a dramatic effect on the lives of people living with AIDS. more For specific questions about the FightAIDS@Home Project, including how The Scripps Research Institute and World Community Grid are working together on the project, please go to the FightAIDS@Home FAQs. I'm terribly sorry, but if your teachers did not get further than amplifying scam theories, and unable to follow some links for detailed information, u should get your tuition back and find another school/uni to broaden the mind. ciao

I have myself run into this same exact problem. Don't know what to say...ignorance, denial, not wanting to take responsibility or scared?
I don't know why some people got never ending excuses not to participate in things like this. I used to think not being able to verify the website out of fear for viruses, scams was the real issue...I no longer believe that is the case. So much potential...yet so little hope. Until the rest of the world wakes up...we carry the burden and pass the torch in the darkest hours in hopes of making the world a better place to live for future generations. |

Hi qafdemo,
Check up on http://distributedcomputing.info/index.html which tries to keep track of all public distributed computing projects. It would take a massive worldwide conspiracy to get all these universities and research institutions together while suppressing any dissent or warning messages on the internet. Lawrence |

(When it comes to recruiting) Getting over the ignorance/fear hump is a "Result" in itself. My recruiting Line.. D.C. are Global Charity Endeavors that Millions of people are working on. If there were security problems we would have heard about them by now. But you haven't because it is Secure. I need you to look past the Bull and Help!
