HDC Beta 5.04 Errors

BOINC User ID 225561, Host IDs 41341 & 69799

The new beta units are completing sucessfully on my hosts, in normal amounts of time, but failing during result upload with the following error:

2006-10-20 12:18:30 [World Community Grid] Computation for task BETA_B04661_0083_YTMA71-42-11-23-c1_3 finished
2006-10-20 12:18:31 [World Community Grid] Unrecoverable error for result BETA_B04661_0083_YTMA71-42-11-23-c1_3 (<file_xfer_error>
<file_name>BETA_B04661_0083_YTMA71-42-11-23-c1_3_0</file_name>
<error_code>-161</error_code>
</file_xfer_error>
<file_xfer_error>
<file_name>BETA_B04661_0083_YTMA71-42-11-23-c1_3_1</file_name>
<error_code>-161</error_code>
</file_xfer_error>
)

After this error, the unit stays in my BoincView list for a while with the status "Computation done" instead of the normal "Ready to report". It finally gets cleared out later, probably during the final report phase.

This has happened 5 times in a row so far; I don't expect the other units to do any different.

On the bright side, the graphics look OK.

Have u checked the Result Status page?

This is a post on another project forum indicating:

To deal with the display problem, you need to use e.g. WinWord to do a replace on the less than/greater than symbols. Use square brackets instead.

The 161 error is a red herring. It just means something like "the error files BOINC is trying to upload don't exist, or are empty".
The REAL error message is missing. This seems to be a recent "problem", and I don't know why it is happening, just that it is. A LOT!

If you look in the file yabsd.out, which is in the dataout folder of your model, there should be an error message, or description, at the bottom of the file. THIS will tell you, (or us), what REALLY happened.

The usual causes of failures are overheating, (caused by lack of air flow in the case, and/or dust on the heatsink), overclocking, (the processor just can't handle the intense, continuous, calcs at that speed), an agressive AV program which locks files trying to do a write, just so it can check them, (Avast, Antivir), and, I feel, a bare minimum power supply, which is letting the voltages sag under load.

The unofficial BOINC wiki has an error code list ....161 description is not very informative: http://boinc-wiki.ath.cx/index.php?title=Error_Code

Re: HDC Beta 5.04 Errors

Thank you for your input. I have looked into this error and it appears to be a configuration problem with the BETA workunits. Unfortunately this affects all workunits downloaded so far and up until we can correct the configuration. Most of the workunits are returning with a finish code of 0 which is very promising as that means the workunit finished properly.

Again, thank you for your participation in the BETA environment and World Community Grid.

I haven't been able to find any more detailed info. The WU computes normally, finishes, and gets this bogus error when it tries to upload the results.

Please let us know when the bad WUs have been cut off and removed from the available WU pool, so we can flush these doomed bad ones and resume fetching normal work (until the next set of beta WUs are ready). Thanks.

Re: HDC Beta 5.04 Errors

I had 6 of those WU's run today and ended with "computational error". I've aborted the other 5 BETA WU's that were on my computers.

The graphic view has alternating horizontal bars across the background. I could consider this a texturing effect, except that the bars go across the text, rendering the text unreadable.

Re: HDC Beta 5.04 Errors

The bad workunits have been flushed and cleared. We are now in the process of loading good ones.

Also - I have gone in and granted credit for users that had these errors. 30 boinc credits (210 World Community Grid points) and one hour of runtime per result. Without the validation process to award credits normally this is a rough estimate of what members would have received (although the runtime is a on the light side).

You will not see this if you view the results stat page but it will show up in your stat history the next time that the stats run.

As uplinger mentioned, we are sorry for the error and the problem was due to me failing to update a configuration file.

We really appreciate all of you who have volunteered to be beta testers and we appreciate you monitoring the test closely.

Re: HDC Beta 5.04 Errors

Yeah, I just reset the WCG project on my system and was given normal HDC WUs instead, so the bad beta WUs have been cut off and removed. You can abort the bad ones now without being handed new bad ones to replace them.

Edit: as knreed just said. Sigh. Stupid simultaneous posts... d oh

Can you get a screen shot of this and email it to support@worldcommunitygrid.org

I would be interested to see what you are. If anyone notices something strange on BETA Please post something or email the support and screen shots are always helpful :)

Thanks again!
