I've had one of my devices start acting more bizarre lately. Normally,
I would crunch a WU in 5, maybe 6 hours. Within the past week, I jumped to 12 to 16 hours per WU and reading posts here see no one else is reporting similar happenings. Yesterday, I noticed my client was idle (clicking on task tab - blank screeen) so I tried re-trying communication and this is what I get (last night and just now): Requesting 8640 seconds of new work # What's that about? Normally, 5 or 6 seconds, maybe 10 seconds Scheduler request succeeded Message from server: No work could be sent Message from server: (reached daily quota of 12 results) No work from project Couple of things: 1) Certainly haven't done 12 results from this device, nor all 3 devices 2) What's with 8649 seconds new work? Regarding troubleshooting.. I've exited BOINC, restarted BOINC. Rob |

Hi Rob,
----------------------------------------Can u please have a look here and see ig any Workunits are listed with error or other suspicious return code: https://secure.worldcommunitygrid.org/ms/viewBoincResults.do WU's suddenly going slow(er), is not a good sign. U might want to checkl for virus/trojans/spyware. What BOINC version and OS are u running on? ciao rob

I've been monitoring my completion status, pending validations
and validations - looks normal. Regarding slowdowns , I've periodically gone into task manager and see CPU using and FAH is consistently clocking 98% of the CPU, so I'm not competing with a virus - that or a very sneaky virus... but I doubt it. Rob |

The time u see in the Taskmanager is just a snapshot, like in a SLR camera capturing 1/2000 of a second......in short u might still have something...a full scan nver hurts.
----------------------------------------The daily quota was recently set to 120 or higher for Help Defeat Cancer, for people with extremely fast multi CPU machines.....dont know about the FAAH quota.....maybe it's trying to send, but not succeeding.....at any rate the FAAH server/validator have had some problems, so knreed or compadres will have to look.......what's your device number? Can be seen in the first 7 or 10 log entries in the message tab....than send a mail to support which u can find under Contact Us. ciao

My bad... I did not see all the errors (I don't believe they were
there last night, but it was late - maybe they were). I'm ringing up errors like crazy on every WU - that is why I hit my 12 limit. Perhaps they are having problems as this device has returned 340+ results (it isn't as if I'm experiencing teething pains). Thanks... Rob |

It looks very much like your computer has been cycling through work units - downloading a unit, failing quickly, then downloading more and more because they are completing so quickly. The quota system is a defensive mechanism that BOINC employs against this situation.
Please will you let us see the messages on stderr describing what went wrong? It's a text file in your BOINC folder. Now, can you think of anything you changed recently? New hardware or software, or an upgrade or patch? There are a few things you can do to try and fix this. But it will probably be quicker if you let us diagnose the exact problem first. |

Strongly recommend to run some memory check routines......as u observed, machine much slower and no-one else reporting your issue.....cant understand why u are not seeing the errors in the results status page you've been following. Also if u have a lot of 'pending validation' with much shorter times than normal it's an indicator of something awry.

I looked up the error, and I quote the wiki:
This is a Microsoft Windows® "stop" error. This specific error is most likely related to an error initializing a Dynamic Link Library. What to do about it? Well, you can run some diagnostic programs on your system, a memory tester in particular. You can also try reinstalling BOINC (wipe all the files it leaves behind in the BOINC folder). Lawrence has a collection of utilities filed away in the FAQ forum. You may find them useful in diagnosing a hardware issue. |

Well... I'm working again (crunching WUs).
Here's the rest of the story. Earlier that evening this box was unresponsive, so I hard booted it and that was when the BOINC client later dumped out on all the FAAH/HDC WUs. One curiousity is that whenever I grab WUs I'm requesting 8640 seconds of new work. I know for a fact in the recent past, I would request 6 seconds new work, 7 seconds new work, 12 seconds new work, etc. but not values as large as I'm seeing. Has this device been identified as some high-powered device and is now getting larger WUs? (They typically take 14 to 16 hours to complete now - BOINC flags them as 150 - 190 points and faster boxes average this down to 70 points. Bummer here is I'm not getting nearly the "thruput".) Rob |
