(Edited subject line -- was "Project '2 plus 2 is 4' - everyone is encouraged to participate", and added next sentence.)
----------------------------------------I think this thread deserves a second look (bump), as compared to many other less helpful threads. Please see my next post, below. Whether you are teamless, a HomeBrewer, or on another team, I encourage everyone to help with my '2 plus 2 is 4' project. I think it has the potential to really help the WCG and grid-computing in general. Please check out my site at www.2plus2is4.com. Thanks. That's an excellent start. I'm looking forward to what you do with this. There's a vast untapped resource out there.
What do you have planned? Off the top of my head, useful resources will be instructions for major deployments, executive summaries for the head guys, lesson plans, and things of that ilk. Do you have any teachers involved yet? There are so many subjects that this can tie in to - geography, biology, IT... it's a killer idea. |

In the hope of encouraging members of the WCG to promote this project for the benefit of the WCG and grid-computing in general, I have removed all references and links to the HomeBrewers team from my 2plus2is4 website. So now there is no excuse for not helping with this project and adding a link to www.2plus2is4.com on any team websites that you might have. I hope that all of you will support this; I don't know how much it will help, but I think it has the potential of accomplishing a LOT. Please take a look at it and give me some feedback, such as thoughts on how I can make it better or promote it more. I will be contacting my wife's uncle, Raymond Simon, who is the Deputy Director (2nd in command) of the U.S. Department of Education; his wife, Phyllis, was instrumental in getting a computer system set up in the Conway School District in Arkansas. If we can get them behind this, that will be a tremendous boost.

I just spent about 30 minutes with a candidate for State Representative here in Arkansas, explaining grid-computing in detail, the WCG, and my project. He had never heard of grid-computing, and seems very interested. Let's hope that he will support us if he is elected.
----------------------------------------Didactlus, I'm sorry I didn't reply sooner. Thanks for the reminder about the grid game on TryScience. I've incorporated a link into my website. As for teachers: no, I haven't contacted any yet. I'm focusing on the bigger picture of trying to get ALL of them (mandated by law) to teach about this. Cheers. Last night I emailed a candidate for Governor of Arkansas, and referred him to my project website; I've also contacted a number of other people. Still plugging away. This is what my sig file looks like on most of my emails and newsgroup posts:
Bill Velek -- my web-sites: www.velek.com & www.2plus2is4.com You're invited to join "HomeBrewers" grid-computing team to help cure diseases; visit http://home.alltel.net/billvelek/team.html I keep the last sentence most of the time, especially when posting to brewing forums, but when I send a message to candidates or officials or charitable organizations, I delete or modify the last two lines to eliminate reference to brewing so that folks will not somehow be put off by that. Cheers. Bill Velek |

I really do think, in my humble opinion, that I have identified what is probably the main and most significant problems for recruitment for ALL grid projects -- public apathy, ignorance, and mistrust -- and I've offered what I believe is an excellent and easily accomplished solution -- educating our children about this through our schools, ... yet practically no one else seems to think that this is a worthwhile endeavor. I say that because this '2plus2is4' project is receiving such a chilled response; I have been inviting and urging the ENTIRE community here at WCG, including teams besides the HomeBrewers, to get behind this project in some way. I posted this thread, and another thread in the team room since I felt that this is important enough to warrant a non-team post, and except for JUST THREE PEOPLE who have replied, there has been dead silence. And that's even after a few 'bumps' back to top of the list. I even went so far as to make my site 'team neutral', i.e., neither linking nor referring to ANY team, and I made a specific announcement of that fact, and I still can't get anyone interested.
----------------------------------------We've got to try something, and if this effort is successful, we should see a HUGE increase in the number of crunchers over the next few years -- perhaps far more successful than any other recruiting campaign. But it seems that most people are content to compare stats, issue certificates, pat one another on the back, make silly posts, or bitch, argue, and fight with one another. And in the process, something as important as this project quickly drops down the list because of many petty things, including immature flames wars. This is very frustrating. Well, enough with my venting; I just hope that some of you folks will reconsider and try to help with this project in some way or another; if you are, please let me know. Encouragement goes a long way. Thanks. Bill Velek [Edit 2 times, last edit by Former Member at Oct 28, 2006 7:05:23 PM] |

Hi Bill!
You had a great idea! Please don't get discouraged by "our" lack of attention to it! Plug on man! "We", need your efforts to get us focused together. If you don't see as much response from the thread as you want, remember as I post, only 153 of "us" have viewed the Thread in 13 days.. I can't imagine that "any of us" are not pumped for your Idea here. Big Ideas... Any Ideas, start small. ( just like the Whole DC thing had to!) I promise to help by Promoting Legislation here in WA. State. And do absolutely Admire you for your 2+2=4 efforts! Go Team! Robby |

Bill,
----------------------------------------Don't get discouraged. Keep plugging away. Every little bit helps. Great oaks come from small acorns, but it happens slowly. Cheers Sgt.Joe

Bill.
This is a great idea and I will support it to the best of my limited ability. Suggestions from you, on how, might help. In return, a little less U.S. specific and more global citizen focus in the wording could be friendlier imho. i.e. The main text could be entirely global with "a word to the U.S. citizen" and "Arkansas" as a didtinctly unique paragraph, toward the end. trying to be constructive, please ignore all suggestions without guilt. I did not read your thread earlier because I thought it was just another team recruitment promo. Please consider edoiting the heading yet again. Cheers. ozylynx ![]() |
