Try as we might we are not getting a great deal of publicity for the great efforts that are being made on the World Community Grid and it's potential
----------------------------------------Many of the members have written to many of the news outlets and to the various Organisations that are involved HIV and Cancer research with very little if any success. Each month I write to the NFCR after receiving yet another email that doesn't contain a link to the www.worldcommunitygrid.org but instead for example this month Grilled to Perfection Pumpkins, sweet potatoes and acorn squash are rich in vitamin A and beta-carotene, two nutrients that work together to help stop cancer before it starts. Instead of candy this Halloween, try making a Pumpkindoodle Cookies! http://www.nfcr.org/Default.aspx?tabid=430 How much more productive to have a link to http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org instead IMHO If just one of us writes to these organisations then the result is usually nothing what if we could co-ordinate this process so that these organisations would sit up and notice? Your thoughts/ideas/suggestions please Dave ![]() [Edit 2 times, last edit by David Autumns at Oct 13, 2006 11:39:10 AM] |

----------------------------------------I like this idea and have experienced the same when e-mailing various charitable organizations (HRC, Greenpeace, Oxfam, etc.). I think we should start posting contact information for the organizations in the forums, and then we could all send a standard message (I'm always unsure what to put in the subject line to capture attention & not sound like spam... or in the body). ![]() |

----------------------------------------Advertising at your local free HIV testing clinic? POZ magazines, their websites, http://www.amfar.org/cgi-bin/iowa/index.html (AMFAR is good..check the out) ...targeting people who might have an interest or stake in the research. Reaching out and touching hearts, minds and souls. Social networks such as Myspace. Public signs. Bumper stickers, WCG shirts, including BOINC with the upcoming Windows Vista..lol Technological efficiency of upgrading to multiple cores processors such as dual core and upcoming quad cores(November and later). AMD X2 4400 is great solid choice with liquid cooling. Dell with core 2 duo's at reasonable pricing. Telling people about it and installing on friends computer like I have. Yahoo and other instant messaging and chat room programs to spread word. Running the grid on spare super computing resources. Installation at work/school with permissions. Maybe, do the www.youtube.com thing and get some videos up onto there. Imagination and creation are the limits. ![]() |

Hi Dave, thank you for that! Maybe you could get them to add a page on WCG on their Website! Anyway this page really took me back a ways. I surfed this up at NFCR . UD was my very first crunch ! blushing ![]() |

I'm not saying we are doing a bad job of promoting the grid in the many many ways in which we do that. I'm just suggesting that in the same way that we together make a century by tea time (in the UK) that with a joined up approach we could make our voices heard in bigger and higher places
----------------------------------------One email from that chap David Autumns again might not make a difference but what about a 100 or a 1000 each from a different WCG Cruncher each with their own reasons as to why it's a good idea to crunch? I sit here on the South Coast of the UK and it's a long way to go to visit the NFCR (Just 1 example) personally in Bethesda, Maryland USA but not if you are living on East West Highway it's just down the street and maybe a thousand hand delivered emails might make it past the spam filter and be taken seriously. This is a call to put our heads on differently and think in alternative ways. There are now over 226,000 of us each one of us with an idea how we might share this WCG secret. Here's a thread to share those idea's openly Over to you... ![]() |

----------------------------------------Yes The "EMAIL AMFAR NOW" campaign. (After they don't respond) The whole WCG idea needs a better "Intake" site. Maybe with snappy interactive java and heartfelt flash Movies. There is so much more info to disseminate now than before that I am sure that a reassessment of product delivery info, can truly effect the new user curve. Hi Dave
Glad you've restarted the thread mate. I'm thinking if it could be done, say as a website ( similar to the wiki possibly ) could people or editors or Mods, whatever put up a list of places to contact and also maybe how many ( and keep updating it ) people have contacted the institution. Or would this be too much to update . I think some people might have good ideas but not want to contact them. Maybe they are shy or don't have time, don't know what to say, hate writing to companies, are worried about rejection, etc, etc ,etc. If there was some where you could look, like a global or wcgwiki directory of good idea companies to contact, perhaps some people who have more time or inclination could start to contact them and put up replies, either positive or negative. I'm also concerned, HMMMMMM, maybe not bothered myself, but if a company might be interested and has never been contacted before and would like to help if they'd heard of it, suddenly becomes, with out even a first contact ( ROFL ) scenario, the campaign of 10,000 hand delivered ( but well meant ) emails. Like a first contact demand bill finally going on to a red demand accompanied by a rather intensified campaign. What do you reckon mate. If I would be interested after a nice polite e-mail but suddenly became one step short of victimised I might go the other way. Just a thought, dissmiss it as you may, but I feel we don't want any adverse reaction to something so good that deserves some big gun corporate assistance. |

Maybe even ( sounds bad to say we are a world community ) split the world back up to countries and people know their country better than anyone else.
Perhaps we in the U.K could co-ordinate a U.K company list and that is our language. People in Russia could do their countries list etc, I know thats 2 extremes but I couldn't write a halfway decent e-mail to someone in Russian and not have them rolling around the office in stitches. Perhaps if all the people from one country in their native language sent one, it would be better than more e-mails in foreign languages. I'm sorry if this offends anyone but really the comment is aimed at me personally and people like myself who are that antiquated and with that low an I.Q we only speak one language fluently. I do know from these very forums that there are some exceptionally clever people that can speak and write several languages. Just another quick thought as today is a busy with little lad day but I'll keep checking back and add if I can. p.s. whats the Orange Mobile water torture. Sounds very painfull. Cheers all |
