others like Xtreme systems have turned up in grand style setting their own benchmark breathing a bit of life into the place. Don't do this. It is cheating, and severely annoys some of our members. I would love to hear Xtreme Systems explain how they make three times the points for their reported runtime than other teams, since they insist they play by the rules. Now let's see how much we can grow without artificially inflated scores... ;-) I happenned upon this thread by the title. Thought maybe I could add some ideas and then I saw your comments. When we came to WCG I asked what the policies were and was told" We'd like to see everyone using the stock BOINC client." I took that as gospel, installed 5.4.11 on my machines, went back to the XS forum and very strongly asked everyone there to use nothing but a stock boinc client. The subject came up here and there in the DC sections of XS and every time I strongly urged everyone to use nothing but the stock client whether it was 5.4.9 or 5.4.11 and to the best of my knowledge all are doing so but since I can't access any accounts but my own I have no way of proving that either to you or to myself. You mention"I would love to hear Xtreme Systems explain how they make three times the points for their reported runtime than other teams, since they insist they play by the rules."That brings one simple question to my mind: How could we be getting three times the credit with a quorum system that grants the middle claimed credit to all? Please answer that for me. The only answer that I can see if that is true is that the machinery we use is way above the norm used by most teams. I do not mean that to belittle anyone as there are a lot of people out there with fast equipment besides us. I do think that we have a greater percentage of high end equipment than most and those systems do the WU faster by a great amount versus your average home PC and that may be what your seeing. We take what we do very seriously. Some would say too seriously but in the end, the projects benefit. If you read the posts over at XS you would see that the bulk of the conversation is about what can we do to overtake EasyNews. Not an easy task(no pun intended) but a goal we have set for ourselves.Right now we are planning a group buy of woodcrest systems to help in that goal. There's no discussion of optimised files, but of optimising what we can do as a team to reach a goal of 4-5 million points a day. If you have any way to see what client is being used by an individual, please let me know as I want this all fair and aboveboard as much as anyone else does. If not I would suggest that any time issues are based on the fact that your seeing some very fast equipment all in one team at a much greater percentage than your used to seeing. I made up my mind after that "grand welcome" I got from the gentleman here in that thread on 9/11/06 that no matter what I would behave calmly and rationally but it does sadden me to see this kind of comment from one of the people who is an advisor here. If you have any info to support your assumption, Kevin, one of the admins here has my email address and I would love to hear from you. Thanks for your time. ![]() |

Ok as I have had my thread hijacked by the great boinc points debate I thought I'd put forward my point of view re XtremeSystems
----------------------------------------Yesterday that team had a runtime of 1 year 332 days 14 hours 40 mins and 41 seconds and as a consequence crunched through 3,443 work units for Fighting Aids at Home and Help Defeat Cancer now to me that's good news. How many points they got for it, as we all now know the points system is awry, I don't give a monkeys (as they say in this part of the world). If those 3443 work units are validated as all present and correct which they have to be with BOINC then that's great news and long I hope may it continue and with a bit of luck increase. That's what we are here for we are really just one big team that ran for 131 years 249 days 23 hours 7 min and 27 seconds yesterday can we not just rejoice in this fact? Now back down this thread this organisation was mentioned http://www.amfar.org/cgi-bin/iowa/index.html Do we know if the are already partners with the WCG or if they have any links to the WCG already? If not then that's a top idea rbolo29 for a co-ordinated team effort to get a WCG link and news item on that site. What say all? ![]() |

Yes
The "EMAIL AMFAR NOW" campaign. (After they don't respond) The whole WCG idea needs a better "Intake" site. Maybe with snappy interactive java and heartfelt flash Movies. There is so much more info to disseminate now than before that I am sure that a reassessment of product delivery info, can truly effect the new user curve. A last comment on this issue: I would welcome the gentleman with the greek name which I'm afraid my Irish tongue can't quite pronounce to get in touch with me at his leisure and discuss privately any questions he might have so that I might ease his fears and perhaps open his eyes to who we are. No horns protruding, we don't bash babies against the rocks for amusement, and mulitnational..A place where Jews and Arabs have no differences, Irish Protestants and Catholics don't argue, just a place where performance is the goal of all. To the admins, I have no issue with giving this gentleman my email address as I would love to show him around XS and what we do. Maybe the answer to this issue that seems to be just under the surface here is openness and education between us. That's an honest offer, no sarcasm at all. Lets end this issue by showing a skeptic how we work. This will be my pleasure and I think can put to rest many questions. Im listing the figures from my DX3600 for the past few days as taken from my stats. The 2 most recent days should be ignored as one isn't finished yet and the day before I made the mistake of clicking a link sent on MSN messenger and the mother of all viri hit me and forced a full format.Yes, I make mistakes too! ----------------------------------------I've moved the positive statements to http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=9267 where we can continue to discuss how we might work together to get the WCG noticed and more crunchers and new research onboard the grid. If anyone would like to contribute to this discussion please follow the thread above. Thank you Dave ![]() |
