I'm new. Why should one join WCG and not grid.org? Both seem to use the same software. So what's different?

Why not join both? If you have more than one computer, that is. By definition, you cannot dedicate all your computer’s 'spare' CPU cycles to two different clusters.

I Appoint My Computer to Faithfully Execute the Terms of my Will. troeder Note: The agents for grid.org and WCG are similar enough that you should uninstall one before installing the other when transferring your computer from one to the other. |

I'm new. Why should one join WCG and not grid.org? Both seem to use the same software. So what's different? World Community Grid of course! But hey, I'm biased We use a modified version of the UD client, but they are very similar. The first project, Human Proteome Folding, is jointly hosted by both grids. At this point, the differences are small (e.g. slightly enhanced Agent). The big difference will come in the future. After this project is finished, all future projects will be run ONLY on the World Community Grid. The goal is to run several projects a year. Switch now or switch later, it's up to you

Saying "all future projects will be run ONLY on the World Community Grid" and "Switch now or switch later" makes it appear that grid.org is going to close down. That's not the case. The two grids will simply part company. Please clarify your post. [Edit 1 times, last edit by Former Member at Dec 11, 2004 8:12:57 AM] |

If you read through the preceding posts, you will see that I recognized the situation very aptly in my earlier post. After I finished posting it, I started kicking myself for being so whimsical. "I should have composed a serious answer, with gravitas", I thought to myself. "Something about the feeling of satisfaction of contributing to important causes, irrespective of the grid actually chosen." But once the additional posts started coming in, I decided that I had been . . dare I say it? Right on the money.

It's the same project and we're running it jointly. i.e. grid.org members can run the same project that WCG members can run. This will not be the case for future projects. All future projects that run on WCG will not be run on grid.org. I hope that clears it up. Grid.org is not going away. Any future project that are run on that grid are the decision of United Devices. I'm sorry if my post was misleading. It was not intended to be.

Thanks for the clarification Rick.
I gave the computer that I was crunching with here to a friend, but I'm building another one. Hopefully, I'll be turning WUs in again soon. (Probably for Team USA ) |
