Re: can anyone tell me why......

That one has had me for a long time....sometimes, when it's on "round robin" and follows the schedule it sends the 'tasks ready to report' (phase 2 of a completed WU reporting cycle) with the next scheduled contact. Sometimes when in panic mode it sends it immediately after phase 1 of the reporting (the actual data files containing the product). If it thinks it's over-comitted it will send them too without much delay. Also, when it starts pulling new work, does it send the 'tasks ready to report'.....have a look over at the unofficial BOINC wiki and see if u understand what's written against what is actually happening in BOINC.

......nothing i worry about any more, just hit Project Update button and u force it to be send

handing over to the experts :>)

ciao

Re: can anyone tell me why......

A work unit result can include several files to be uploaded, and there can be all kinds of problems and complications to get through when uploading, so to make the process safer, BOINC reports your results in two steps.

First, it uploads the result file(s) when the work unit is finished computing. This doesn't always go smoothly, and takes however long it needs. Once all the files are uploaded, the status becomes "ready to report", and BOINC schedules a second, separate server contact session to report that all the result files have been uploaded and the result can now be logged into the database.

Since you're probably going to be contacting the server again fairly soon anyway to get more work or upload another result or whatever, BOINC tries to save itself some server workload by putting off this second stage result report contact for an hour or two, to see if it can combine it with other routine traffic. If you contact the server for whatever reason within that time, the second stage report message rides along, almost for free. If you don't contact the server within that time, BOINC will eventually sigh heavily and do a whole server contact session just to report the results, grumbling all the while.

You can force it to send the results report immediately by doing a Project Update, but there isn't really much point, since you're probably going to have to wait for the quorum to get your points anyway. And really, even if you're the slowest of the quorum, who cares if you get your points now or in an hour or two? Unless maybe you're about to break a million and it's 23:50 UTC...

Re: can anyone tell me why......

RickH describes it much better english than i can....rumble and grumble reasons why part 2 of the reporting is delayed. Here's actually the referenced Unofficial BOINC wiki description:
Ready to Report
General

This status indicator shows that a Result has finished and that all related data has been uploaded to the Data Server. This is the final status that will show in the BOINC Manager. After the Result has been reported it will be deleted from the local Host.

Results will be reported automatically at the following triggers:

1. New work is needed. Completed work will be reported at the same time.
2. The Deadline is less than 24 hours away.
3. The Result has been in the Ready to Report status longer than the Work Buffer setting.
4. The Result is less than the Work Buffer setting from it's Deadline (New for v5.4.xx)

Note: There is a bug in the 4.4x Versions of the BOINC Client Software that causes Results to be reported immediately after the status changes to Ready to Report.

Edit Oct 21,'06: Condition 4 added in the Wiki.

not really sekerob, his explanation was just more detailed. your's is a good beginning, helping me to understand the process. thank you both smile

actually rick, it is very important. especially if you're in a tight points race with a teamate whose less than 5k points ahead of you and with a mouth 10x's bigger than yours. shock biggrin
