Increase Points Per Result

Hi everyone :)

I make only about 350 Points Per Result. Some people I see make 750 Points Per Result. Can I upgrade my PC so I can increase my Points Per Result for FightAIDS@home? Ive noticed my points per day has been increasing but not Points Per Result.

My Processor is
Pentium 4 3.4 GHZ comparison = 187

My memory is
1280MB comparison = 300

My storage is
9.77 comparison = 196

Re: Increase Points Per Result

hi qafdemo,

can u please go to your Result Status page and find an example where u got 350 (50 BOINC credits) and another where 750 (107 Boinc credits) was given. U can get the detail like below, by clicking on a Workunit name where the Status column shows 'valid'. Only when there are 2 in a quorum of 3 claiming 107 BOINC credits or more, will ALL 3 get that (including yourself). If 2 have 50 or Less BOINC claim, all 3 will get the 50. In the Quorum 3 rule, the lowest and highest claim is dismissed and all 3 get the one in the middle!

Please advise with the requested examples.

Update.... now i realise u use UD Agent........how can u see scores of others for FAAH on UD Agent? If u are looking at compare member stats, it could very well be that u run UD agent with a throttle of 100% and the others run 50%. Then u process twice as fast, and given that UD Agent pays out in wallclock time, not CPU time, someone else doing twice as long over a FAAH will get double the points with the same device rating.

thx

Re: Increase Points Per Result

Bear in mind that work units are different sizes. In particular, different projects often have significantly different work units and work unit variation.

Over time, these may average out, particularly if you compare members running the same mix of projects. However, some variation occurs because of the way UD awards points.

The UD point system has some flaws. Please do not try to exploit them.

Re: Increase Points Per Result

qafdemo,
I don't pretend to understand the points system. I use the UD agent, which so far has run flawlessly for me. I only have enough memory to be crunching FAAH right now and even though the clock time on the UD agent is supposed to be related to the points I am somewhat baffled by the last three results. It probably has something to do with the system rating, but I am only guessing.

Date hr/min/sec pts result
10/08/2006 0:000:23:35:52 589 1
10/07/2006 0:000:23:05:32 327 1
10/05/2006 0:001:00:23:37 615 1

I really don't think it matters as long as the WU's are getting done correctly. smile

Keep on crunching

Joe

Re: Increase Points Per Result

Points per result doesn't depend on how fast your PC is. Any particular work unit is worth about the same number of points no matter how long it took you to crunch it (ideally; benchmark inconsistencies can mess this up a little, but it should average out). A faster PC will get more points per hour, but not more points per result. It just crunches more results per day.

I think your average per result mostly just depends on what projects you work on. Some projects have longer work units than others. 350 poiints is fairly typical for a FAAH unit, but I've recently been doing a lot of HDC which has pretty short work units, and my points per result has gone down to 194. It used to be much higher when I was crunching HPF 1 and/or 2.

Someone with 750 points per result has simply been working on projects with longer work units than FAAH. Since FAAH has the longest work units currently being issued, it also means they've been around for a long time so that they drove up their average back when longer units were being issued.

Re: Increase Points Per Result

No, that's how BOINC works. UD points are awarded differently.

Re: Increase Points Per Result

Thanks for your replys everyone. I get it now, different projects issue different points per result.

My memory is
1280MB comparison = 300

If I buy an extra GB of ram will it speed up the workunits .Is it mostly CPU that speeds up the workunit?

Have any of you upgraded your ram and notice workunits getting finished faster? Right now its taking my pc 9 hours to finish FAAH workunits.

thanks :)

Re: Increase Points Per Result

qafdemo,
It is my understanding that additional memory will not speed up your processing of WU's, unless you have an awful lot of other things running. Your system does not appear to be memory bound. The speed with which a WU is processed is dependent on the speed of your processor in doing floating point math.

Cheers

Joe
