Graphics as screensaver?

I had implemented BOINC as a service ... is there an easy way to switch to using the new graphics as my screensaver (my preference would be to keep the agent as a service, and just point to the graphics as a screensaver, but not sure if that makes sense / is possible)?

Yes!

Open the service manager.
Stop the BOINC service.
Change the log on properties of the service to "Local System" and tick the box "allow service to interact with desktop".
Restart the service.
You may also need to restart BOINC Manager.

Re: Graphics as screensaver?

OK ... k ... the "Show Graphics" button now works in the BOINC Manager ... Now is there a way I can only have that come up when my screensaver comes on ... i.e., is there something I need to point to in my Windows screensaver settings?

Re: Graphics as screensaver?

Just set your screensaver to the BOINC screensaver.

Re: Graphics as screensaver?

Sorry to be a pest, but it doesn't seem to do anything. I have two boinc.scr files ... one in C:\Windows dated 8/3/2006 and one in C:\Windows\system32 dated 5/5/2006. In both cases, I just get a black screen for a screen saver rather than the new graphics. (I think it used to be a moving dispay of percent completed for each of the two running WUs, although I hadn't used it in awhile). Any ideas?

Re: Graphics as screensaver?

It works fine for me. Open Display Properties, select the BOINC screensaver in the dropdown list, click preview.

It will show "BOINC Screensaver Loading" for a couple of seconds, then show the graphics.

You shouldn't have two copies of boinc.scr, and you shouldn't need to go hunting for it.

That's the big one. If it doesn't start working from the other advice in this thread unistall BOINC, delete any copies of boinc.scr left on your hard drive and start over. Leave the BOINC folder intact and it should pick up where it left off on your old tasks.

Re: Graphics as screensaver?

First a bit of backround ... I had given up on this, and later noticed in another forum that the screensaver setting of "On resume, Password Protect" needed to be unchecked for it to work (not allowed given our corporate security guidelines).

Then, when we had the outage a couple of weeks ago, I installed the UD agent, used it for awhile, and then switched back to BOINC (and took the UD agent out of my startup) . After this I noticed I got an HDC graphics as a screensaver ... after a bit of investigation, I figured out that the UD install had switched my screensaver to the WCG one (instead of BOINC) and this was showing the HDC graphics (even though I thought I was back to running BOINC only at this point). At first I thought it was showing BOINC results through the WCG screensaver, but probably whenever my screensaver runs it is now running the UD agent?

So ... finally to my questions ...
1. Is there something different about the WCG screensaver, that could be done in the BOINC screensaver as well, to allow it to work when "password protect" is checked (or do we not even have control over the screensavers?)
2. Am I correct in assuming that the screensaver was causing the UD agent to run (I never noticed it in the Taskmanager, but that was presumably because it stopped when the screensaver stopped?)? If so, just out of curiosity, was BOINC also running, competing for processor time with the UD agent or did UD somehow cause it to stop?
edited to correct observations

Re: Graphics as screensaver?

Hello dbeeler,
The UD screensaver is quite different from the BOINC screensaver. I don't think that your corporate security practices let you run the BOINC screensaver the way that you want to. The UD screensaver will just show a WCG icon unless you are running the UD client + application. So apparently you are running both BOINC and UD. This should show on Task Manager. I suggest you run one or the other but not both unless you have more than one core. Otherwise you are eating into your memory unnecessarily.

Open the service manager.
Stop the BOINC service.
Change the log on properties of the service to "Local System" and tick the box "allow service to interact with desktop".
Restart the service.
You may also need to restart BOINC Manager.

Thanks for this configuration setup for BOINC! I'm going to test it in my environment because I would still like some way to monitor the BOINC processes from the login window, and allowing the BOINC screen saver to show graphics would help.

However, is the allow service to interact with desktop option a critical step only for the showing of screen saver graphics, or should it be set when running as a Local System service?
