Hi,
I have a machine that's not always connected to the Web when it's processing. It downloaded a job ok when I set it up, but I'm wondering what happens when it finishes the WCG task? Does it wait until it's reconnected to the Web to send the results and get another job, or does it lose the results? FYI (although not really relevant) it gets removed from the Web to make way for my son's X-Box internet gaming. Since I haven't been able to educate my son to shut down the PC, I figured it might as well be doing something useful while it's heating the room! Thanks and regards, Dweebs |

Not a problem. As long as you reconnect to the web less than 3 weeks after downloading, the Grid Agent will send back the results and download a new Work Unit. After 3 weeks, it will discard the results and just download a new Work Unit. X-Box internet gaming is really taking off!

when a work unit is completed, the agent will try to connect ot the grid, and if it can't it will retry after some period. At first it will retry in a few minutes, then again after a longer interval, and then finally settle on something like once every hour. If the PC is likely to only be connected to the internet for a period of less than an hour, there is a chance that the timing will be such that the agent won't happen to try to connect while the PC is on the net.
However, if you double click on the agent icon in the system tray to show the agent, and see what the progress is, if the agent needs to connect to the grid, it will try to then regardless of where it is in the one hour retry period. So, when you do connect the PC to the internet, open up the grid agent to check the progress of your current workunit, and if the agent has been trying to connect to get a new one, it will try again right then, while you're on the net. |

A clear, complete answer to a question that will be asked for many projects to come. I nominate joatmon's explanation to serve as a guide for a new entry in the FAQs.
