I have a query about the “Run Only as Screen Saver” option in Agent Preferences. There was an earlier query:
“ . . . . . . The fastest "device" on our team belongs to my wife; I will do better at gaining her cooperation if the "agent" can run without pre-empting the screensaver - she would much prefer to see her family pictures flash across the screen. . . . . . . “ The answer to the query in “Consolidated Feature Wish List” is: “ You don't need to run it as a screensaver. Provided you haven't checked "Run only as Screen Saver" on the Agent preferences, you can use whatever screensaver you wish. It will continue to run in the background just fine. ---------------------------------------- Rick Alther World Community Grid Application Developer ---------------------------------------- [Edit 1 times, last edit by Alther at Dec 7, 2004 2:44:04 AM] [Dec 7, 2004 2:43:42 AM] “ This answer could be interpreted to mean that if the option “Run Only as Screen Saver” is checked then Rosetta will run if and only if the WCG Screen Saver is used. I have been saying that any Screen Saver can be chosen. The only requirement is to avoid selecting (None) for a Screen Saver in the Settings – Control Panel – Display –Screen Saver tab, since that will keep the Screen Saver from running and keep the UD Agent from starting Rosetta. I have never tested this. Can someone give me a definitive answer? Lawrence |

No. I can't give you a definitive answer. However, I think that when you select "run only as screensaver" it will run only when the WCG screensaver is active. At one point I did select "run only as screensaver" and selected a different screensaver, and I do not think the agent crunched, but I am not sure. IT was during the couple of days when there were bad workunits and the agent was resetting after about 1.5%. I do not remember the fan kicking on though, which the WCG agent crunching does to my laptop, makes the fan run all the time.
So, do a test and see. use her computer, since it is fast. Check the percent complete from the screen where the rotating chemical is shown so you can get tenths of a percent complete, and then set a different screensaver, let it run for an hour, go back and see if there was any progress, then let us know what you find out. and no, this is not some lame attempt to cripple your team so others can catch up ![]() |

Morning Lawrence Morning Joatmon
----------------------------------------You can run a screen saver of your choice and the WCG agent at the same time. If your screensaver does not hog your processor then the remaining spare processing power is still allocated to the WCG agent if you uncheck the run only as a screensaver option. That said if you're a keen cruncher and you are trying to get up that points table (and contribute more of your CPU to the HPF project ) then the best screensaver to have is "none" and just have the power management for your monitor switch it off while you are not at your PC.Hope this helps Dave p.s. Lawrence could you drop me an email so we can get in touch. I'm looking for content to put on the teams website who's address can be found at the end of this post (thanks for the tip Joatman) - Do you like the subliminal plug for My Online Team, that's My Online Team "the best supported team on the grid". Have I told you about My Online Team Joatman? I'll clear off now ![]() ![]() [Edit 1 times, last edit by David Autumns at Dec 8, 2004 1:24:35 AM] |

Sorry haven't fully answered the question
----------------------------------------If you check the run only as a screensaver option the the agent only runs when the WCG screensaver is running. If in this mode of operation you select an alternative screensaver from display properties and it is run instead then no contribution of your PC is made to the HPF task. Did I mention My Online Team? Dave ![]() |

Thanks for the answers, all. So now I know that the "Run Only as Screen Saver" option requires the WCG Screen Saver to run. This had better be emphasized to any future queries about changing Screen Savers.
