Halfcard,
----------------------------------------I don't know if you are writing this tongue in cheek or not. But no I do not agree with that sentiment. It took me about twice as long to read your post in "fonetik" spelling as it would have in properly spelled English. My son believes you. Life may be easier if your spelling system were to be adopted. However, he is a speedy typist, especially with chat room lingo. So many shortcuts !!!. I do think many of the constructions are confusing, especially for non native speakers, but that said, many of the non native speakers use and write English better than those of us who learned the language as our first language. Thanks Sgt.Joe

And some of us can type quickly and pay attention to spelling, grammar and punctuation. Nobody expects perfection, but some of the garbage I have to read on the 'net makes my brain bleed. And not in a good way.
But then, I've been reading all my life*. I know long words like "marmalade" and "light-year". And I know never, ever, to start a sentence with a conjunction. ^_^ * Except for the early years. But we don't talk about those. |

OK how about a compromise? We could start with a few very simple changes.
Example: all 'k' sounds would be spelled with a k. cat = kat technical = teknikal |

Noah Webster's 1844 Compendious Dictionary of the English Language simplified the spelling of a number of words by dropping out silent letters, etc. It has had an enormous impact on American English (color vs colour). Even so, some of his spelling reforms were not generally adopted. After Webster, the general use of standardized spelling in widely available dictionaries has frozen spelling reform. George Bernard Shaw ran a quixotic campaign to modernize spelling, but it flopped completely. It might make more sense to campaign for math reform, introducing more linear algebra in college-preparatory high school curricula.

Morning halfcard
----------------------------------------At the risk of creating a major schism between myself and my American Crunching Buddies the answer is simple...Just move to the States .You are absolutely right it's a daft idea spelling tyres with a y, colour with a u and centre with the r and the e in that combination. Man the most irritating HTML Tag has to be <center> For me I enjoy exploring the English Language. Quite how we can claim it as English is another matter for debate but in my 2941 posts to date I've learnt a great deal about the language. I'm a grammatically challenged northerner from the State of Yorkshire in the UK and so I have great difficultly in using was instead of were - to this day I'm still not sure. Many words in my vocabulary I have had no idea how to spell and I must confess I regularly use MS Word to conjure the right combination of letters for me. But as for me I'd say that it's worth the effort and those 2941 posts haven't been in vain in helping me appreciate the nuances of a beautiful language. (For the record I got regularly and appreciate wrong in draft 1 )Dave ![]() |

As one who hails from the West Riding myself (and still lives there!) all I can say is :-p
In other news, the <center> tag is deprecated. I wonder why? (Okay, it's because it's a formatting tag not a structural tag, but that ruins a perfectly good contention.) It's English - it doesn't have to make sense. |
