Hi,
This is probably a silly question, but if I don't run the UD agent at all, but set the WCG as a screensaver (in my display properties), does the WCG actually run while my PC is in screensaver? The reason I ask is that I can't run WCG while I'm using the PC since it takes up too much RAM, but it looked like when I came out of my screensaver, something which had been consuming a lot of RAM and CPU suddenly vacated, so I thought that it might be the UD agent in screensaver mode - which would be perfect for me since it wouldn't affect my usage of my PC when I'm actively using it, but I'd be glad to have it hog RAM and CPU while I'm not using it. Thanks for your insights, Andrew |

It ought to. I haven't tested that particular configuration personally.
Try it, and if you have problems get back to us. The screensaver display should show the work unit progressing. |

Alin84,
----------------------------------------No experience with UD screensaver, it would be logical for it not to release memory when not running in screensaver mode only **. Experimented by ticking the screensaver option in UD agent and apply. The app stayed in RAM & Virtual Memory and UD Agent told "Task Execution Paused", which is similar to the snooze mode, albeit latter being time limited. Here are 2 posts that cover the subjects: http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/help/viewTopic.do?shortName=screensav#212 http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/help/viewSearch.do?searchString=screensaver There is a way to check in Taskmanager (Ctrl-Alt-Del then hit Process tab), when it has come out of screensaver, look if there is a process like WCG_xxxxxxx.exe. If it takes up alot or not, u got the answer. There is an alternate approach which is picking a time of the day u want it to run and on which days of the week....u can set that in your Device Profile in My Grid, Device Manager....the instructions are here: http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/help/viewTopic.do?shortName=devmanage#126 ** Removing from memory and restarting anytime u walk away from desk and return, would cause the work unit to restart from the last checkpoint saved! ciao

Well, of course, I can't tell what is in memory when I come back to the pc since it's already gone by then. However, I can see in the task manager that there was something which was taking up about the same amount of memory that the UD agent uses and was occupying 100% of the cpu.
I hope that it is the WCG process as this is the perfect way for it to run for me. |

Alin84, it's not about the same, its exactly the same.....so apparently u can work fine with the UD agent and science paused and or snooze, but not when running full time and using CPU at the very lowest level of priority.
----------------------------------------Tell us what you see that WAS there occupying memory.

Well, I wish I could see what was in memory, but the second that I touch the PC, whatever was occupying the memory and cpu is gone, so there is no trace or record. I will just assume that it was the UD agent.
I had no problem with the CPU usage of the UD agent when I was running it full-time. It was only the memory usage that was a problem because it caused me to be in a state where everything else was constantly swapping out to the hard drive and thus applications appeared to be slower. |

If u go to Taskmanager u can add a 'peak memory use' column to the view. If coming out of Screensaver and u look at a process called something like WCGxxxxxxxxxxx.exe (see previous post), and it occupies current memory near peak memory or in the 50-100mb then its still in memory, just idling.
----------------------------------------There's a post on how to add this column Member Tip SR 03-06: Taskmanager Memory Usage Readings
