Not new to WCG - but clueless

Couple questions -

1) If I choose to run this not as a screen saver what will that do to the speed of my machine.

2) Can I also run this on my non-work computer? Does it have to be online? Does it have to be networked to my work computer?

Appreciate any help. Thanks - Susan

- Yes, the screen saver will slow down your system

- No, you don't need to be online to crunch, but you do need to connect to the internet when uploading and downloading results.

Hope this helps,

Re: Not new to WCG - but clueless

Hello overcast,
1) If I choose to run this not as a screen saver what will that do to the speed of my machine.

Probably not much. The application program runs at lowest priority in place of the CPU Idle task. If your computer does not have a large memory, then it might slow down because it has to swap memory to run other applications. Even so, there should not be much of a slow down.
2) Can I also run this on my non-work computer? Does it have to be online? Does it have to be networked to my work computer?

You can run this on multiple computers. Once you have registered your first computer, just remember to register additional computers with your member name and check the 'Previous member' box while registering. There are 2 different software clients for Windows. The simplest one to install is the UD client ( http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/viewJoinNow.do ) but the one with the most options is BOINC ( http://boinc.berkeley.edu/download.php?all_platforms=1 ). BOINC allows you to cache work units locally, with only occasional network connections.
