Boinc
Continuous Network Loop BUG ? Project: World Community Grid Account: PTabolinsky Using Virus Protect: AVG ANti-Virus Free OS: MS XP w/SP-2 updated Problem The below description has recently been happening when there apparently are no work units to download and the system stands idol for a bit. Occurance now at the end of every finished report, request for new work time. To the tune of two or three times a day (when I catch it finished/sleeping) for the past several days. My hardware goes to standby or sleep when finished and does not receive any work units from server. When I wake my system up, boinc has a message for me that says: BOINC MANAGER NETWORK STATUS (X) BOINC failed to disconnected from the internet [ OK ] button The above message starts a continuous loop and will not release the system. Attempts to use the [OK] button or close function fail -- do not work while the popup graphic window continues to rebuild with same message reprinting over and over on top of each prior window. My XP task manager sometimes freezes also. On the last accasion I ended task "BOINC MANAGER-0" and received the system task message: End Program BOINC MANAGER-0 THe system cannot end this program because it is waiting for a responce from you. I ended the boinc.exe in the task manager after the warning all data would be lost. I then did a soft reboot. The system then ran up OK with boinc.exe/mgr auto-start download, with sys settings as shown below and in Messages. Hi,
----------------------------------------The ever repeating only seen before with BOINCview as add-on. A cluster search provided this result: http://clusty.com/search?query=BOINC+failed+t...p;sourceid=Mozilla-search it included the exact message http://boinc.berkeley.edu/dev/forum_thread.php?id=614 which includes this post: Message 3295 - Posted 2 Mar 2006 18:15:55 UTC - in response to Message ID 3292. How do you connect to the internet? If by chance through ADSL/Cable, open Boinc Manager, Options, Options, Connections, set it to use LAN. Setting it to LAN seems to have worked. Not sure how it got out of whack, but the error messages have stopped. Thanks Jord. Tom. have a look if the answer might be in here ciao PS try also upgrading to 5.4.11

Sounds like your network settings are messed up. Do you have a permanent Internet connection?
Sometimes computers have problems with hibernation and network connections. You may need to repair the connection using the Network Connection Manager. |

Sounds like your network settings are messed up. Do you have a permanent Internet connection? Sometimes computers have problems with hibernation and network connections. You may need to repair the connection using the Network Connection Manager. ISDN is an always on, digital LAN connection and my set "default". This is the fastest (other than expensive satilite) I can get out here in the remote woods. It's been on for about 9 or 10 yeaars w/little problems. But, then problems can always happen - - that's why they're called problems. :>) It appears that the problem is the interface between BOINC I/O driver program and XP someplace or possibly internal to Boinc since it appears to the originator of the error message. I lost all the messages when I rebooted my XP sys. If it happens again I'll have to get pen and paper since the copy/paste is kaput too. I'll spend a little more time in investigation also. The problem jumps up in a similiar situatuation as follows: 9/10/2006 12:48:55 PM|World Community Grid|Sending scheduler request to https://secure.worldcommunitygrid.org/boinc/wcg_cgi/fcgi 9/10/2006 12:48:55 PM|World Community Grid|Reason: To fetch work 9/10/2006 12:48:55 PM|World Community Grid|Requesting 10 seconds of new work, and reporting 1 completed tasks 9/10/2006 12:49:06 PM|World Community Grid|Scheduler request succeeded 9/10/2006 12:49:06 PM|World Community Grid|Message from server: No work could be sent. 9/10/2006 12:49:06 PM|World Community Grid|Message from server: No work is available for Human Proteome Folding - Phase 2 9/10/2006 12:49:06 PM|World Community Grid|Message from server: (there was work but it was committed to other platforms) 9/10/2006 12:49:06 PM|World Community Grid|No work from project 9/10/2006 12:55:42 PM||Rescheduling CPU: application exited someplace between 12:49:06 PM (above) and when my system sleeps because of no activity leaving the computer or program thinking it's supposed to be disconnected when it's not since it's allways connected. I feel certain that a small do nothing low priority loop would keep my system awake when there is no work, or just a low work unit resent over and over could solve the problem in this case i.e. compute/timer, check, no work recompute/timer, check, work or no work, continue. Whatever, or even work from another project would help. Of cource I'm not at the console when it goes to sleep ! I'll be back if I can figure out anything specific. Right now my sys is happy computing. Paul T. |

The reason you're not getting any work is you don't have enough projects enabled.
There is a new option in your preferences that allows you to receive work from any project if none is available for your selected projects. I suggest you enable this option. |

If talking about the BOINC internal error messages, they're not lost... go to the BOINC program dir....there is a "stdoutdae.txt" file that holds all up to the minute for a longer period and a few err catcher in addition. Believe somewhere there's a post here on the forum that instructs how to repair a connection of WinXp......had to do it manually recently as over the years WinXp got all confused.

Suggestion taken and done. Oh, there is no "preferences" exactly but after going to "My Projects" and saveing the projects selection as you suggested, the system came back and said my preferences (not projects) have been saved.
