Hi guys,
----------------------------------------We are from team XS and could be interested in running the Beta WUs. We have a few questions, though: - How many people are doing this? - Will points rewarded be equal to the 'normal' BOINC client (ie using the quorum system) - What will we be running (ie testing new projects, or testing new software) We would be willing to help if someone can answer those questions for us. Sincerely, Martijn from team XtremeSystems [Edit 1 times, last edit by XS_Martijn at Sep 9, 2006 9:31:59 AM] |

He Martijn,
----------------------------------------If i say the magic word hi-per hour payment....look at the Beta Global stats and compare to Help Defeat Cancer below that.... you'all should be rushing over......see the Beta publications...the schema is separate from the regular but adds to your global WCG score. Read that 700+ had enrolled, so 'de spoeling is dun' if considering the number of WU's u'd get. Actually 4 copies are send out, and quorum 3 is used. The testing as perceived can be both project testing ... e.g. is likely to happen when HPF2 comes back or software testing like this GUI interface for BOINC. ciao Beta Testing Project Statistics Statistics Last Updated: 09/09/2006 06:06:02 (UTC) [3 hour(s) ago] Totals: Run Time (y:d:h:m:s) 0:344:17:03:36 Points Generated 443,134 Results Returned 1,048 Averages: Run Time Per Calendar Day (y:d:h:m:s) 0:114:21:41:12 Run Time Per Result (y:d:h:m:s) 0:000:07:53:39 Points Per Hour of Run Time 53.56349 Points Per Calendar Day 147,711.33333 Points Per Result 422.83779 Results Per Calendar Day 349.33333 Yesterday: Total Run Time (y:d:h:m:s) 0:231:00:24:04 Points Generated 293,039 Results Returned 695 Help Defeat Cancer Project Statistics Statistics Last Updated: 09/09/2006 06:06:02 (UTC) [3 hour(s) ago] Totals: Run Time (y:d:h:m:s) 587:201:12:47:04 Points Generated 181,452,487 Results Returned 1,032,485 Averages: Run Time Per Calendar Day (y:d:h:m:s) 11:031:08:23:32 Run Time Per Result (y:d:h:m:s) 0:000:04:59:06 Points Per Hour of Run Time 35.25432 Points Per Calendar Day 3,423,631.83019 Points Per Result 175.74346 Results Per Calendar Day 19,480.84906 Yesterday: Total Run Time (y:d:h:m:s) 9:120:02:26:24 Points Generated 2,960,762 Results Returned 19,552

Hi. Only the grid techs can answer for sure, but I'd guess from the beta project stats that maybe around 300 or so computers are enabled for beta work (231 CPU days yesterday). Maybe 200ish or so people, depending on how many dual-cores and multi-system users? Not very many, anyway, out of the 20k or so total WCG BOINC users.
The points are awarded in the standard way for all WCG projects, based on your BOINC benchmarks and your reported CPU time to completion, averaged out by the quorum of 3. You should see the same points awarded as you're getting now. I think the higher average points per hour reported in the project stats is just a side effect of the beta being BOINC-only. BOINC seems to award more points per hour for average-to-higher performance systems than the UD client, which seems to favor lower-power systems. And I suspect the beta participants tend to have higher power systems, which would raise the average anyway, even before the BOINC favoritism bonus. As for what will be run, it's whatever the grid techs feel needs to be widely tested before being turned loose on the whole community. The beta program is new, so there's only been one batch of beta work sent out so far, which was the just-finished test of new FAAH graphics. In general, I'd expect that pretty much any significant change to the science apps will get at least a little beta testing to be safe. And since new projects generally require totally new science apps, they should get quite a lot of testing. But beta work will be sporadic, with long periods without any in between system changes. I like the feeling of helping the project above & beyond the normal crunching, and it's fun to be among the first to see software improvements and new projects. But you also have to be ready to accept and cope with bugs, including lockups, crashes, and lost work. Don't beta test on a machine you don't watch fairly closely. But if you're up for it, we can certainly use some more help. The more of us there are helping to test (up to a point, anyway), the quicker and more thoroughly new stuff will get tested and put to work. |

Thanks everyone. We will definitely consider moving over to the Beta testing. Hope to see you all soon!!
