Notebook PC Reboots Restarts Processing Jobs

I have been running the World Community Grid on my notebook PC for over 260 days. Until recently, this worked just fine as I use my notebook at both work and home and it is connected 24x7 except when I am transporting from one location to another. In the past, the shutdown and restart of the notebook to transport (or normal reboots for various reasons) never affected the running of WCG. It would just start where it left off at shutdown time. However, now I am seeing that WCG seems to completely start over every time I reboot or shutdown! This means, loosing many hours of processing time each time I do this AND I have no idea if it is starting the same job over or if it is downloading a completely new job to start running.

Has anyone else noticed this? Is there anything I can do to keep from starting over every time I reboot? I recently calculated that I am loosing a day or so a week of processing time just by rebooting.

Obviously, some changes were made to the client that causes this but I can't find reference in the forums (granted I am not much of a forum user till now).

Any help or information will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks. That is one way I thought of but it still doesn't address the need to reboot on occasion for maintenance and updates (at least every few days). I wonder why they changed the client to have this behavior whenever it wasn't like that in the previous version.

Re: Notebook PC Reboots Restarts Processing Jobs

You always lose a small amount of work when you exit the WCG agent. Unfortunately, some of the recent work units have fewer checkpoints than before, so you may lose a little more work - or even be kicked right back to 0%.

Sadly, this is unavoidable. WCG do their best to make the science applications save as frequently as possible, but sometimes it takes more work than is justified by the benefits.

Re: Notebook PC Reboots Restarts Processing Jobs

Dang it! MS just rebooted me after an auto-update and now I've lost another 9 hours of processing. That's 18 hours today and I am starting all over at 0 again. This is senseless and such a waste of resources. Why did the WCG programmers change the client to do this?!? This is almost enough for me to think of quitting crunching... if I didn't feel I had so many people depending on us to get these jobs done...

Re: Notebook PC Reboots Restarts Processing Jobs

awoconnor, it struck me u have to boot your laptop every few days for maintenance / updates.....do not understand as i boot about once a month and else implemented the hibernation if i'm tired of the fans blowing their horn. Much has been written about the how's and why's of the few checkpoints...some don't have any and have to complete uninterrupted for the full stretch.

Something to add....the client (UD.exe) is only the monitoring part and file send / receive agent...absolutely nothing changed to that part. The science.exe's stand loose from that. Those processes and models are so complex, that restarting them at any random point is not possible...or stop your computer from doing anything else, which I'm sure u wont like.

How to stop the auto-update / boot has an option (second radio box from the top in the Auto Update configuration app), so that u can force it to wait for your confirmation...there are even tweaks where u can stop the irritating yellow shield and the reminders every 30 minutes until u are ready to boot...when the WU is finished for instance ;>)

ciao..
