PS3 will be compatible with several Linux distributions.

What's stopping crunchers from loading Fedora Core 5 onto a PS3, then downloading the appropriate version of BOINC for that distro?

Don't think it's the OS... its the science application that needs to be able to process on the particular Cell Processor.

Since Sekerob keeps beating me to the punch when I try to answer problem queries, I'll spend some time here. laughing

bbover3 has asked for a report about the possibility of using the PS3. I don't expect that he will get a quick answer because first we shall have to get Linux up and running on the PS3, then get some experience with compilers to see what sort of code they produce and how difficult it is to program the PS3.

As Sekerob says, the real question is how difficult it is to port an application to the PS3. A lot depends on that, but until we have the compilers actually running on the PS3, it is all hypothetical. It is conceivable that it might be so difficult that it only makes sense to port a very simple application program for a project expected to last years. ( devilish Which we could ensure lasted that long by making it available ONLY on the PS3.) There are many possibilities to consider. Until we actually see programs coded for the PS3, we are just guessing.

Ignoring the possible difficulties, the PS3 is a very attractive system. It would let us reach out to a new class of members and start actively recruiting in the schools.

Summing up - - we are not ignoring the PS3, but it will take some time to gather the information necessary to seriously consider it.

Here's a u-tube video of a fedora install on PS3 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_ZXcuhJkwx4 ..... now we need X-man days per science to convert the proprietary code, test it, validate the output and find enough PS3 owners to actually not game, but crunch. No progress without trying.
