PlayStation 3 tackles world ills

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/technology/5287254.stm

The spare processing power of Sony's PlayStation 3 (PS3) will be harnessed by scientists trying to understand the cause of diseases like Alzheimer's.

Sony has teamed up with US biologists who already run the distributed computing project, folding@home (FAH).

The project harnesses the capacity of thousands of PCs to examine how the shape of proteins, critical to most biological functions, affect disease.

etc,, hmmm that sounds like a major coup, good for them, hope this generates good publicty for grid stuff in general, hmm wiondr if this will help the wcg projects??

Re: PlayStation 3 tackles world ills

They say "100 gigaflop scale per computer". Does that mean 100 gigaflops per second? Nah! I don't believe it.

Hi Dagorath

apparantly nearer 200GFlops are possible its closer to a DSP Chip in the style of it's design (Trying not to tread on any technical bods toes at IBM) take a look here

Re: PlayStation 3 tackles world ills

Ciao Autunno,

Yes, u got my vote for a fat bonus in fatti........ and at least u can say ' ....per processor'

There's been discussions for years, that the GPU cards are so specialised in calculations that would be suitable for the complex things DC's do, yet it's been talk (in the visible spectrum).

oops, now i need to put on my 'ray ban'

a dopo
